When I'm big blind, I don't look at my cards and stay focused on everyone elses reactions to their cards and then study their bets. Then finally when its coming back to me I already know what I should do before I've even looked at my cards. I figure, I'm already in it anyway (committed).
And I'm also more prone to stay in as long as I can, to see what comes out. Big blind has its advantages.
Some disadavantages are the fact that you've already lost those chips and your hand could suck. But I usually try to play it anyway..
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Why not look at your cards and if you have a hand...raise and try to steal the blinds or get a decent pot?

Dont listen to Urateup, he still doesnt understand why you cant steal your own big blind.

I disagree that because you're in the big bling you're commited to the pot. Playing marginal hands out of position, which is usually the case while in the big blind, is very difficult and usually doesn't have much value. Unless of course your pot odds dictate otherwise. Do you know what pot odds are?
Also, hands that "suck", fold them.

Doing this is stupid. Obviously you should look for a few reasons:
1. IF you have a really strong hand you definitely should raise because a raise has positive EV. When you have AA or KK, you WANT more of your money (and others) in the pot before the flop. To fail to raise here is costing you money long run.
2. You are certainly not committed to playing any hand even when in the BB. Sure, if no one has raised the pot, you will definitely play for free. But you can't consider the blind $$ "your's" anymore. It is the pot. So, to blindly defend eith any two cards is a long term -EV play.
3. Finally, if you don't look at your cards until you have seen the flop, you might be giving away a lot of information about what you actually do hold to your opponenets when you do. Say the flop is 772 and you look down for the first time at your hand when it is your action and happen to find 72. There is little chance that you won't give something away since you will be surprised at what you see. AND, everyone will be looking at you at that point. It is much better, in the blinds at least, to look at your hand right away since you will be able to see everyone's action before it gets to you anyway. That way, no one will see your reaction to your cards when you look.
As an aside, out of the blinds, I think it is best to look to your left UNTIL it is your turn to try and see if you can guage the reacion of your opponents who will act behind you when they look at their cards.

You very rarely dont have pot odds to call a raise from the big blind. The key is to be able to fold 2nd or 3rd pair when it isnt good.
If you find yourself pay off consistantly from the big blind w/ losers, then you are better of folding, even when the odds might be in your favor.

That's probably a leak of yours Dave. OOP it's alot easier to just let shit go. For all intents and purposes (especially with position, which is, like, the only important thing in NL) it's best to play as if blind money is lost - only call hands that you'd call from EP with.

I play was referring to limit. You do consider the money lost, but a raised pot w/ 3 callers means you have 8:1 odds as opposed to a button call who only has 4:1.
Unless you are heads up, you need to see a flop since you are getting 6:1 or better. If not, then you are playing scared poker.
