This is supposed to be the first Bond episode--the beginning of it all. So what are they playing?????

Texas Hold'em????

Are you kidding me? He was always, ever, baccarat. Suddenly this guy's a Texas Hold'em master? Give me a break. He was never even a poker player.

To make matters worse, the writers (not to mention the actors) don't know the difference between the turn and the river.

Good movie though.

I was afraid this might be the case when I saw they were cashing in on the popularity of the game Sad

Is it bad? Are we talking Maverick?

there's a thread already for this under movies.

Yes, I know a good case can made for that being where it belongs, but since the topic is current I thought I'd throw it up here. I found it amusing that they'd do it--I mean, I just don't see British spooks, especially one of such legendary urbanity, engaging in a pursuit so unapolagetically plebian. Texas Hold'em is hardly the home of the suave sophisticaion which is 007's signature conciet.

no other card game is played for as high stakes anymore.

and the movie is only quasi-set in the past, so just like the current gadgetry and tech stuff, NLHE is the game of pros.

No argument there. It's played not just by the pros, but by the best of the best. But is high stakes hold'em the province of the insouciant cosmopiltan, played with the jaded disinterest Bond affects? No! Nay! Never!

Putting hold'em in a Bond movie is akin to allowing a 6-gun toting, we serve, protect, shoot to kill and ask questions later Texas Ranger into the stuffy aristocracy of MI5.

I was reading a review of the film on another forum, and they said that the poker scenes were bad, but the rest of the film is good.

I guess they chose poker instead because of the rising popularity of the game, and probably appeals more than baccarat
