Hand #1 from live NL

Hand #1:

Hero: $270
Villain: Covers

7-handed NL 3/5 blinds at Hollywood Park, $200 buyin. I’ve been playing for about 2 hours, have only showed down a few strong top-pair like hands, nothing special. Villain is a good player, knows the game, plays a lot of hands preflop.

Villain opens in the cutoff for $20 (standard raise) and I call with 76o on the button. Reasoning: I knew this raise didn’t mean a strong hand, I was pretty sure I could take this pot down on a lot of boards.
BB calls.

Flop: 10 8 4
Perfect flop for me.

BB checks, villain leads for $40 ($65 pot). I re-evaluated his hand as hitting this flop in some way, but vulnerable. It looked like JJ, QQ, or some top-pair/paint kicker type hand. I call.

Turn 10 8 4 2

Villain leads for $100. Now I know he’s trying to protect his hand. I push for ~225 total.

Comments, specifically about raising/not raising flop and pushing turn.

Only reason why I don't like it is b/c he is getting monster odds to call with an overpair here. If he has JJ or QQ as you think, he is getting almost 4.5-1 on a call. Most good players would grimace and call it down.

I would have rather had you raise the flop as a semi-bluff and then hope to get to the river cheaper with your hand. I am also not sure I call $20 preflop with 76o here. That is 9% of your stack and given that you need to likely flop two pair or a str8 to win enough to compensate, I would want to be suited for a third hand I could win with before calling this much.

Interested to see how it ended up.

I agree with shorn! I don't think you have enough money to push him off his hand. I can only see this working if he doesn't have anything at all. If he has any hand he will probably reluctantly call due to the odds he is getting. I also think you aren't deep enough to be playing unsuited connectors here. Like shorn said, you are putting too much of your stack in preflop. Just my two cents. So, how did it turn out?

loose call preflop. and he is going call the push but thats okay since we Still have 8 outs any five or any 9

I would have raised the flop.

You said u could take the pot on a lot of boards, that is one of them imo.

You also have fold equity at that point, when u push that turn u dont have much anymore considering your stack.

About the preflop call, it's quite loose.
You said u werent giving him that much credit for his raise, so you could also have raised right there and take the free $28 with just 87o.
If he calls you can get a decent flop (as you did) and either semi-bluff at it or just check behind since you've taken command.

Well its not that I don't give him credit for a raise, but that a raise from this guy means a wide range of hands, not just AQ+ and JJ+.

I pretty much agree with Scans analysis, raising the flop is what I should've done, when I had fold equity. If I have villain covered, then I like my play, but he also screwed my plans over when he bet $100 on the turn, I was hoping for something like $60-75.

My preflop call was one of those plays I very rarely make where I think I can take a pot away after the flop. I had a really good table image and was seen as tight/solid.

Anyways, he called and I hit a 9, so its all good!
