1/2 NLHE Hand for comments

Here is a hand played by a buddy of mine that he wants feedback on.

Game is $1/$2 NLHE, $200 max. Hero has $370 at start of hand, villain has $262. Villain is described as a relatively tight player and solid, but we have no specific read on him. He has not shown down any strange bluffs or really big monsters.

Hero is dealt AdAc in MP. Villain is UTG and raises to $8 (standard for the table). Hero re-raises to $22 to go (Anyone raise more here?). Villain calls, so we go to the flop heads up with $47 in the pot.

Flop is Ts 8s 2c. Villain checks. Hero leads for $44. Villain check-raises all-in for $196 more. So, pot has $331 in it for Hero to call $196.

What's your play?

Tough to say with no strong read and without knowing what kind of player your friend has shown himself to be. If he plays a lot of pots and raises a lot, I'd say this is probably just a tight player who's tired of being pushed around. If he's been playing tight/aggressive and hasn't shown any bluffs or luckbox catches, then I'd say villain hit his set or has an overpair to the board.

I think I would elect for a call here. We may be up against an over pair like JJ or QQ. We also maybe up against something like AKss. I think we have to call because our hand is not represented as strong as it really is and the fact that there are alot of hands that we can beat. On the other hand it really depends on how the villain would play a set. However, with most players at this level, they will try to slow play it a little bit more than this. Anyway, I think its a call!

Call.

If he flopped a set, so be it. He could easily have KK-JJ or just think you are full of shit and trying to steal one.

I wouldn't worry about losing a 1 buy-in to an overpair here.

Stack sizes basically make this the reality, especially given the way villain has chosen to play this hand. Basically, we're only losing to a set, and without a very specific reason to do so, I don't think we can effectively put him on that as opposed to some other hand.

Could be a hand like AsKs or AsQs, in which case he's relying on fold equity to make his play worth it. Or he has a hand like JJ-KK (hell, he could even have 99) and is trying to settle the hand here rather than letting you take one off. He's taking a big risk of a laydown if he has a set... yes, I realize that it's fallacious to say he would stupid to bet so much with a set if we actually do call, but that's the reality of the play here.

I call this unless I have a very good reason not to.

If villain has been tight solid, then his 4xbb UTG raise would seem to indicate a high pair or AKs. I would call. I'd be more concerned if he limped preflop.

Thanks for the replies guys. Hero decided that it was too unlikely that villain would play a set this strongly and so he called.

Villain turns over AsKs and hits runner runner Q J for the str8. Bleh....

But, against likely hand range for villain (AsKs, KsQs, KK-99, 88, 22), hero has 64% pot equity making this a relatively easy call.
