I'm a physicist, master degree, specialized in optics. Now I work as a Sales Engineer in a lens making company.
I could've done some R&D, but I always liked to meet people. I believe I can help better a company with my people skills than with my research skills.
The pay is ok, but at least I get to travel. Last month I was in France, and in a few weeks I'll be in San Jose, CA.
So far, I'm very thankful. |
I'm not sure, but I believe he meant Pro poker players?BTW,no disrespect as it sounds like you have your sh*t together.

Hahaha... I noticed it was in the general holdem chat, so that's why I took it out.

20 years old. Toronto, Canada. University student.
I have never considered myself a poker pro but I haven't worked in years and poker pays for my life + school so...
I've been playing the game for 2ish years now, but "seriously" since about March of this year. I have a decent theoretical grasp of the game but rely more on experience. I hope to get into poker tutoring/coaching soon and am seriously working to get that underway soon alongside my studies/game.
I play mainly mid stakes NL cash games (my current is 600nl) and occasionally tourneys to pass the time/get sleepy after class. My Pokerdb earnings have me at about 30k this year from MTT on stars, and I've probably got another 10 sprinkled across a few sites. I am most definitely a cash game player first and foremost. I don't really share those numbers (not accurately, atleast.. heh) but they are good. Quite good.

From what I grasp,Supa is an awesome player with great talent.Maybe cocky, but can back it up.My goal is to reach his level of play before I quit my dayjob.I've only been playing less than a year, but I feel I can at the very least make more than delivering pizza or something of that nature as a second income.

From what I know, ScanX is a professional player, and there are a few other people here who probably could go pro (DaveB in limit games, CisoB in tournaments).

Playing poker for 2-3 years, not really had a proper job since I started playing, took a bit of a break but am back now playing everyday.
I can play all the games to a reasonable standard I think. I will play most cash games, Limit Holdem (10/20) NLH (Up to 200nl sucessfully) Seven Card Stud (Up to 30/60 but usually 8/16 or 10/20) Seven Card Stud HL (10/20) Razz (whatever I can find, usually 8/16, played 20/40 and 30/60) HORSE (10/20)
Tournaments: Every type for whatever buy in.
I do enjoy it, but it's not how I imagined it being, playing full time. I put n a lot of hours on the tables and also off, with countless number of books, forums, hand discussion whole being coached by a top stud player.
I think my current focus is trying to develop some areas of interest in non-poker related areas, such as some sort of business venture. I realised the other day my only interest apart from Football is Poker, and that's probably not healthy.

I am not a pro, but have made a nice side profit from the game over the past few years.
My day job is as a portfolio manager for a large mutual fund company. Not really exciting, but it pays the bills.
I mostly play 400NL and 1000NL, and dabble in 2000NL if the lineup is right.
I actually don't think I would want to go pro as I think it would change the dynamic of playing (less fun + extra $$ to "Oh crap, if I call this $1000 bet and lose, can I pay my mortgage in a few days?").

I could not make as much playing poker as I do at my job. I might be able to net as much cash, but I wouldnt have my benefits.
For a typical jobs in the US, 30% of your pay comes from benefits. So, when you target an income level for yourself to be "comfortable", multiply that by 1.3 and that is what you need to earn in at the tables (or 1.5 if self employed) to reach that level. It is hard.
I just want to share something here, we all seem to think of how great it would be to make a living playing poker. However, if you have been around people that do grind it out for a living, they are (gross generalization) pretty depressing. Each time I go to Vegas and think of how great it would be to live there and make a go of it. After 30-40 hours on the tables and watching the locals who do it, I cant wait to get back home.

I gotta agree with what I've seen so far myself. Seems like a tough way to make an easy living.
Plus how frustrating do you think it is for a mid level grinder to keep seeing those big tourney winners get set for life and here they are grinding it out everyday to get by?

Also, NL100 etc is for no-limit. For fixed limit games, 1/2 means small bet is $1 and big bet is $2 (blinds are therefore $0.50/$1.00).

I wouldnt call myself a pro, although I haven't worked a job since I started playing seriously. I play online here and there , and for how often I play I think I have a good results. These days, I spend my poker time either playing live tournaments at my local casino or a rebuy online. Although , lately I been playing some NL $400 in pokerstars.
I wouldn't advise anyone going professional unless they can take the bad streaks and variance etc very well. Maybe one day I will go professional but for now I am content doing my degree and playing poker when I want.
