how NOT to play A's

Posted Sun Dec 10, 2006 9:49 am GMT by MrDarling
This is an example of way I keep struggling to improve my BR.
Very badly play A's

Full Tilt Poker Game #1384423189: Table Transom (6 max) - $0.05/$0.10 - No Limit Hold'em - 5:33:05 ET - 2006/12/10
Seat 1: MrDarling ($15.50)
Seat 2: abcullenc ($3.65)
Seat 3: aaany1 ($5.40)
Seat 4: oldandpastit ($5.80)
Seat 5: Talcum Mucker ($4.20)
Seat 6: jakester-69 ($4.45)
abcullenc posts the small blind of $0.05
aaany1 posts the big blind of $0.10
The button is in seat #1
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to MrDarling Ace of HeartsAce of Clubs
oldandpastit: your guessing
oldandpastit raises to $0.45
Talcum Mucker folds
jakester-69 folds
MrDarling raises to $0.90
1st mistake , reraise is too small
abcullenc folds
aaany1 folds
oldandpastit calls $0.45
*** FLOP *** Two of HeartsQueen of HeartsQueen of Diamonds
oldandpastit checks
MrDarling bets $2
2nd mistake : No real reason to bet the pot here.
Chances are I am ahead, so way am I pushing him off the pot and not trying to extract more money out of him. Sure, there is a flush draw, but still...

oldandpastit has 15 seconds left to act
oldandpastit raises to $4.90, and is all in
MrDarling calls $2.90
3rd need I say more, C/R on this board can really only mean few hands
oldandpastit shows Queen of SpadesAce of Diamonds
MrDarling shows Ace of HeartsAce of Clubs
*** TURN *** Two of HeartsQueen of HeartsQueen of Diamonds Ten of Spades
*** RIVER *** Two of HeartsQueen of HeartsQueen of DiamondsTen of Spades Five of Spades

Now, I'm not saying this is an obvious fold. On low levels I've seen AK make the same move and I expect any other PP as well.
I think I call this any day without specific reads, right?

However, I should have controlled the pot size better and bet smaller.

Any advice on how to avoid this big losing pot?

thanks

Danny

I don't know that I agree the reraise was too small. You have someone raising fairly big UTG and folded to you in the CO and you reraised making it hard for the button or blinds to call it. You got it heads up which is fine. We don't want AQ to fold this hand preflop do we?

I think the flop bet is a matter of preferance and what is normal for you. Maybe a little smaller to get more calls but I don't think the bet was way out of line.

Calling the check raise at the end I think comes down to what hands villian may make this move with. His short stack complicates matters here.

I dont fault your play on any of the streets here. Especially against a short stack who cant hurt you that much. Get it all in there with your rockets and will you win more times than lose.

Given your position, I think you played the hand fine. There was no way you were getting him out of this hand postflop and you want him in preflop. Not much you can do here, though I would've checked the flop behind him and, if he checked the turn, made a small bet representing the Q. If he reraises behind, then I would have to put him on a Q and lay this hand down. Very tough to say considering the limits you're playing and without any information on your opponent.

Given the ratio of pot size to remaining stack size you can't fold agaisnt all but the most passive and predictable players.

I would check the flop an awful lot, but I would do this to induce a bluff, not to keep the pot small.

Given how much of your effective stack went into the pot preflop you really can't fold, so keeping the pot small in not relevant. If the effective stack size was greater you would need to worry about keeping the pot small.

This is a WA/WB situation where you can't fold. If you're WB you're going to lose your effective stack, so don't concern yourself with this. What you should concern yourself with is maximizing your winnings when you're WA.

Preflop he only had $.90 of $15.50 invested. Personally, I'm going to try to manage this hand to ensure that I either get my whole stack in when I'm ahead (not obvious postflop) or keep my losses to a minimum. That's an ugly flop for AA. He easily could've checked the flop and bet $1 on the turn if villain checks. If villain reraises, he would've walked away only losing $2.90 instead of $15.50 unless I have UAU vision or something and I'm totally reading the hand wrongly.

I guess I've just had my AA cracked so many times that I've found myself learning how to not go broke with them. This may not be the best way to play all the time, I'm sure, but it sure has saved me a great deal of money when I could've gone broke.

Aha, you were referring to the villian's stack. I see what you were saying now. Disregard previous statement.
I'm giving UAU his glasses back right now. They suck.
