Brantford has a poker room and they have a big tourney coming up in may. I was told by a dealer last night that the prize is 40 to 50 grand and tsn will be there for the final table.

Posted Mon Apr 19, 2004 4:13 pm GMT by j0sh
have any details about that tourney?

Posted Mon Apr 19, 2004 4:24 pm GMT by Always_Bored
everything is still not finalized i have been told by the one dealer last night. But he did say $250 buy in, 200 seats. TSN taping the final table. 40 to 50 grand prize pool. But he was not sure 100% and didnt know when it started or when registrations were. But guessed at next month.

Posted Mon Apr 19, 2004 5:51 pm GMT by j0sh
i may need to fly down there to compete in that then Smile sounds like it'd be pretty cool.

if 200 is too much then the 250 that i said it costs is really going to be too much. lol

I know it is a lot. Im kind of worried to enter it. If i lose right away then it costs me the enterance fee plus the missed day or two of work. Its supposed to be 4-5 days for the whole tournament. But this is the biggest tournament ive heard about around here so im definately going to try it out. And im sure i can at least get into the money out of 200 players. Im either being overconfident or right. I have to play to find out.

Can someone give me some info on Casino Rama, Ive never been and am dying to play in a casino. Limits? Tourneys? Good times to play?

Posted Mon Apr 26, 2004 7:05 pm GMT by Icecold99
stant... u got email

Posted Tue Apr 27, 2004 3:11 pm GMT by stant
Thanks for the info. Im gonna try to make it up there on Saturday. First time in casino, little nervous but can't wait. Whats a good time to go?

From my limited casino experience i find that better players are usually out in the day. Everytime I go during the day the players are a lot tighter and making better folds. Everytime ive gone late, usually after 1 or 2 am there are a lot of bad players who will call anything.

Posted Tue Apr 27, 2004 3:53 pm GMT by stant
whats a good amount to go in with. I'll most likely play the lower limit tables for now and see how that goes. Ive started a bankroll from my home games but it still needs to grow before I can really afford to play the higher limit games.

This is wicked. I haven't heard much about poker in toronto etc... I live in Guelph so Brantford is not far from me. Anyways guys I am new to poker. I have a couple of questions. I have currently read "ken Warren teaches hold'em". I realize this is a very basic and simple book. My question is if I have a complete grasp of all the concepts will i usually get torn apart in a casino like Brantford or should i be alright. I would be playing tight/aggressive.

Posted Tue Apr 27, 2004 4:04 pm GMT by MasterShake
My experience so far tells me that the only way to get really good is to play a lot. The books are great, but you have to use the skill in a real life environment to get better.

Posted Tue Apr 27, 2004 4:08 pm GMT by darcy tucker
Thanks for replying really fast. But like say i only know how to play tight aggressive, and only play premium hands. Are people going to get mad or anything like that?

Its tough for me to say because i havent seen you play. But i tend to play tight and it works for me. Just try to keep bluffing down to a minimum because you will get called almost every single time. I first went to the casino to play about 2 weeks ago and ive done very well. I find that there are a lot of bad players at the 5/10 table and its easy to take their money. Let me know if your planning on going, ill meet you there or something.

which one is closer from mississauga, Brantford I assume. which one is better.

people always get mad when you take their money. They would be more mad at you if you beat them with a 4-2 off then A-K suited. Its usually a laid back atmosphere at the 5/10 table in brantford. I was a little worried about what it would be like before I went there, but most people are pretty cool.

Brantford I think is the closest to Toronto. Its good enough for me, I cant compare it to any other casino because Ive only ever played holdem at Brantford.

Honestly this Holdem itch is killing me. I want to play at Brantford so badly but I know I shouldn't yet because I am not experienced enough. I have only played online and have no real experience. Im going to give it a month. :D Then go to Brantford.

I think you should give it a bit more time and try to find some low buy in home games to practice in real life. Unless you want to pay a lot to gain experience at brantford.

can somebody give me a break down of casino play. Ive never played at a casino therefore don't know my way around ie/putting my name down for a table? Do I get my chips at the table? and any other ettiquette. Thanks. Im going to Rama or Brantford, havent decided yet.

Posted Thu Apr 29, 2004 12:17 am GMT by Always_Bored
At brantford you go to the podium at the enterance to the poker room. You put down your name for either 5/10, 10/20 or 20/40. Then go wait (usually) and try not to gamble all of your money away at the roulette table. When they call your name go up to the podium and the guy will tell you what table you are at. Go get your chips at the poker room cashier. Then sit at your table. Play till you want to go then leave. Play in turn. Dont take your chips off the table until you are leaving. Wait for big blind when you sit down so you can get a feel for how the table works. The dealer will ask if you want to post and just say no ill wait for BB. Keep your cards in view. DO NOT STRING BET. when its your turn to act just call your actions so there is no question about it. say "raise" or "call". Once you have said that you are committed to that action. you cannot say raise then just call. or vice versa. You dont have to say it, but if you dont make sure you put any raise in the pot in one motion. Dont put 5 in then try and put another 5 in. Thats string betting. ill let you know if i think of anythign else. Let me know when you are going. Maybe I will go then too.

I was worried the first time I went to. I didnt want to mess up and look like an idiot who had no idea what he was doing. But its really easy and if you do something wrong the dealer or another player will usually politely point it out. If you continue to do the same thing wrong people are going to get a little annoyed. We had this one guy that would try to bet $20 every time it came to him. The dealer would say "sir its only 5" then he would say he didnt want to bet then. and the dealer pointed out that you have already bet you have to leave your 5 in there now. The table was pretty mad at him because he really slowed down the game. so dont be that guy. Good luck by the way. If you go to brantford i might be there. Look for a guy that has a green jacket and a grey hat that says "generation dub" on it. If its a nice day Ill wear my Volkswagen T-shirt, it has a big VW symbol on it. I shouldnt be too hard to spot. My name is Brian by the way.

Seneca Niagara in Niagara Falls, USA just opened their room last weekend.

2/4, 3/6, 5/10, 10/20, 20/40, and NL Texas Hold 'Em, 1/5 Stud, 5/10 Omaha are offered. Tourneys in about a month. 20 tables....free drinks...they bring food at breakfast, lunch, and dinner time, and they are open 24 hours. The dealers are really friendly, as are the Floor people.

If you have been to either of the other Seneca poker rooms in Irving, NY or the newer one in Salamanca, NY....this one blows them away. Turning Stone too, as I'm told....takes a back seat to this Room....but I have never been there, so...

Great Blue Heron Casino in Port Perry also has Hold'em tables. I'm not too sure the Limits though as only time I was there I was in my Black Jack phase.

Can someone fill me in here? Are card rooms (for holdem poker) legal in
Ontario? If not, which part is illegal exactly? The rake? I'm talking about an establishment (maybe with a bar attached) that is strictly for poker games.

I've been hearing that there are various tournaments going on every couple of weeks at area restaurants. They are for charity and prizes are gift certificates and stuff.

I'm told these are perfectly legal because there is no rake and they aren't
giving out cash. Is this true? The "house" (the charity) is still collecting
a boatload of money from people for buy-ins, rebuys, etc....

Any knowledgeable thoughts appreciated... Smile

Matt

Posted Thu Jun 17, 2004 3:46 pm GMT by Ventrick
I think it is only Illegal if they take a rake. Also if the Prizes being given out don't = The amount of money put into the tournament, the Excess would be considered a Rake so would make it illegal.

Besides, who wants to play poker for a Gift Certificate? If I put in Cash, I expect to be paid with Cash:)

insane monday nite at branford, started off, down 600 bucks, in like the first 4 hours, on a 5 - 10 table. The table was insane though, it was gettin capped almost everytime around, people raising on nothing, at first, i tried to hold back for the quality hands, but i was gettin burned everytime, so i went on tilt. Which was basically the cause of the big loss. Lucky for me though , I ended up settling down, playing rite and hit a couple of hands, took me til about 4:30 a.m. but i ended up ahead 15 bucks ( gas money back to st. catharines). Not the greatest feeling though, when work starts at 8 a.m.
