Play vs. Real Money; Luck vs. Skill?

Posted Fri Dec 15, 2006 4:28 pm GMT by Far East
Just curious about a question that me and a couple of poker guys have: How much of a discrepancy is there between Play vs. Real Money in regard to Luck vs. Skill? I believe that skill is more prevalent in a real money game for obvious reasons; however, I've found that many people think the difference is not so great, and that luck may play just as big a part as skill in real money games. So, what do you think?

I think trying to compare real and play chip poker is like comparing apples to watermelons....there just isn't a comparison.

Skill is a big key factor in poker. Probably the biggest. With good skill you create good luck.

I'd say it's about 90% luck and 7% skill.

Hey then, give it a shot. That's how I found out.I won my 1rst 3 real money SNG's,then went broke soon after. Then I read a few books, and it was a winning venture after all.I think one of my biggest mistakes was playing out of my bankroll.Good luck.BTW I'm drunk.Weeeeeeeeee.

Watching or playing for play money to learn how to play for real money is like watching bowling to learn how to play hockey.

When there's nothing at stake, the mentality changes. Why not call that all-in with your 4-outer? You've got nothing to lose.

As somebody who 'cut his teeth' playing play money and freerolls, and worked his way up through the micros, I never understood why everybody feels like there's a magical cutoff from play-money to real-money. The jump from play-money to the micros was one of the least drastic transitions I can recall making.

Re: the percentages: It's at least 4% low-fat mayonnaise. Don't listen to the break-even monkey. However, in the interest of amusing me because the people that are being made fun of are entirely unaware of it, keep it up.

I have a unique perspective on play vs real.

I have worked in the online gaming industry 6+ years.

The software doesn't care if it's real money or play money...the randomness of the deck is simply that--random.

So a player is dealt what they are dealt regardless of whether it's real money or not on the line.
A player's style though is greatly affected.

If it's not real money they are risking then they will play loosley. No risk right?

I have seen years of stats - seen good player whacked off a table by a nutjob that ignores odds and gets lucky...SUPER lucky.

I currently am the webmaster for a 100% freesite but because the site offers cash tournaments (daily/weekly/monthly) for real cash and they only way to get into the tourneys is to accumulate play money wealth...the players don't play so loosley.

Loose your chips and start over.
