Slowrolling

Posted Fri Dec 15, 2006 9:44 pm GMT by aaronw
First off, slowrolling is one of the worst things you can do at the table. I get very frustrated everytime someone slowrolls me.

Now to the question, how do you explain to someone, who is unfamiliar with all the subtelties and nuances of the game, how and why slowrolling is unethical/annoying?

it's not unethical. just explain that being slow is annoying when there's no point to it - that some people don't care about how hot ppl think they are.

How do you explain why it's rude to urinate on someone's house plant in the middle of a dinner party? It just is, because it's sooooo unnecessary and only highlights what an idiot you really are.

I don't understandy why people slow roll and don't do it myself, but I also don't get why it pisses people off. What's the big deal?

it pisses me off because i don't like people pointlessly wasting my time?

Why would i want to watch someone make faces for 30-60 seconds before flipping the nuts?

It pisses me off because there is NO reason not to just call and show the winning hand (if it's a no brainer decision, anyway), except just to show off, waste everyone's time, and get my hopes up about winning the hand.

the reason most people slowroll, is to see what the other person has, now if you made the bet you should show first, if your calling why show your hand just to have the other guy muck, and not know what cards he had, its lost info that can be useful

MOST? I doubt that.

the reason most people slowroll is because they are jerks

Waiting to show is one thing. Waiting interminably to call with the stone cold nuts is another.

If I get to showdown where I called with the winner, I have no problem showing mine first, but I'll ask when necessary to see the other cards since I'm entitled. Normally that's not a problem since the bettor is usually pretty quick to show his hand anyway.

Slowrolling is more than annoying. I see players do it with insidious motives: they want the opponent to feel that it's his pot...they want that to sink in and let his hopes begin to soar, then yank the rug our from under him. It's a form of emotional manipulation, pure and simple. But it has nothing to do with the game except to piss an opponent off and there a more than a few players who enjoy doing that. I think calling them jerks is being too nice about it.

Hrms.... Since Mindgame now agrees with my position, I'm assuming that there's something wrong with it.

AS such, from now on, I'm going to haveta agree that slowrolling is necessary sometimes. In fact, it's a vital part of the game and needs to be encouraged, if solely because of how cool it is.

I will slowroll every hand from now on.

Well, since getting other players to tilt is in one of our tools to gain more $ why nit use slowrolling . It seems to piss most of you, so I guess it is a working tool!

ding ding ding.

But there's also a word called "angle shooting"... Pressing the "technically-not-quite-illegal" buttons too many times gets you never invited back, harassed in the casino, beat up by your car, etc..

Plus, I've found it to be generally more profitable to make friends at the table rather than enemies. The bulk of the money any of us will make will be provided by recreational players, so make sure they're enjoying their recreation.

Isn't pissing people off a big part of poker?

I might have to start slowrolling if it really cheeses people off in a big way.
