If you had the money, could you compete? |

With the recent success of Joe Hatchem, Raymer, heck even Moneymaker finished 2nd in a WPT event before fading it has me wondering......
How many semi-pro or casual player could compete with the big dogs in main events if they had the proper funding to play a full year or two?
I dont know if I could, but I would love to give it a shot.

I am 100% sure that I could not. Even if I fluked a few final tables in a big buy-in events, I'd be surrounded by players so much better than me that I would need to hit a dream run of cards to stand a chance of taking down a top 3 finish. Sad but true.

What makes you feel that you arent as good?
I met a few people in Vegas who said that they played w/ Raymer at Foxwoods and he was a very average player. Now he is fairly highly regarded.
Hatchem says that now that he won the main event, people just bleed chips to him.
Do you need a reputation 1st, or are the many pros not a lot different?
BTW-Men the Master gets crushed at Canterbury when he shows up. He has family here and plays 30/60. Now, limit isnt his best game and the stakes arent high enough for him to give his full attention, but still......

I think the main differences between top playes and your regular joe playing mid limits online are...
Your average joe may be playing scared because of the money involved.
The pros have better live reads on players.
I think most average online players would have the advantage of having seen more situations and would have good reads on betting patterns.
I think most experienced mid level online players could hold their own if they didn't care about the money and got a little experience playing live.

from what i've seen the vast majority of amateurs that think they can compete with the pros are absolutely dreadful at poker. mix in just how hard it is to play "properly" near the end of a good tourney and this question isn't even close.

I don't either. Unless I pulled a moneymaker and just got horribly lucky everytime i screwed up. I still make way too many mistakes.

I don't think I could compete with them i tourny's, but I think given enough time at the tables with some of them, I think I could hold my own at NL cash. On the site I play, there are numerous pro's there already and I am doing quite well. Sure, it isn't Ivey, Negreanu and Hansen, but I think with a solid strategy and some time to watch them, I think I could do OK.

well I know i did play vs Raymer a few times in some of Foxwoods turnys pre his WS win and i knocked him out once it was a Act one to the 03 WPF's
and i know my Grandfather has played with tons of Pro's over the years in some Medium size games and some Turnys and he has done well sometimes and not so well others
so i guess i might if thats all i did and realy did not worry about the money

If I had enough money to play the big events I think I would be able to compete with them....beat them consistently? Highly doubt it.....
Note to add - theres alot of bad players in the wsop. In wsop ME I think I'd be better then the average player, WPT though is usually all good players, be class to have a year or so playing just huge poker tournaments just to see wouldn't it?

The real question is weather they would be able to compete with me.
I doubt it.

Probably not. You gonna stake me or something?

fwiw, Raymer was talking to 2+2 about writing a tournament strategy book before he won the WSOP. He's a great player and would be recognized as one w/o the WSOP.
I think the quality of play in big cash games is way better than the quality of play in big tourneys.

I think what supa said is generally true. Most people who think they could compete with the pros would get destroyed playing with them in their games (that's their cash games... the real games). Conversely, however, the difference in skill between the semi-pros who make a good living from and regualrly beat mid-to-high stakes games (like $30/$60 limit - $10/$20 NL) and the "TV Pros" is not nearly as great as some people believe.
Could I play well in the Big Game if I had the requisite funds? No. I'm not a good enough player. Yet. I hope to remedy that. If I had that kind of money I'd certainly love to educate myself by playing with some of the big boys.
Raymer = fantastic tournament player and a decent cash player from what I have seen/heard. Same goes for Hachem, significantly less so for Moneymaker. But suitedaces is absolutely right. Where you will find most of the skill is in the big cash games and those who beat them day to day. Not in the donkaments.

No, not in NL cash or tournament play at least. Too conservative.
In limit, I don't think I would have as much of a problem, but still wouldn't make it in the long run.
