Crazy preflop Villain: What would you do?

Posted Fri Dec 29, 2006 4:02 am GMT by witt10s
Villain had been at table for about 5 minutes and had been raising every hand preflop to the tune of 6 to 30 bb's.

This hand happened shortly after.

I’d fold it.

Calling isn’t much of an option since you’re hoping for a flop that will give you some assurance and the likelihood of one without an Ace, King, Queen or Jack is low. If any of those land (or even if they don’t) he’ll most likely bet and you’ll be back to square one.

You could re-raise and likely end up all-in, then take a race.
You’re a 70% favourite against a hand with one over, i.e. A-J rago
If he’s got 2 overs, e.g. K Jo you’re a 56-57% favourite.

I think racing is an option, although I prefer to save my races for tournaments and keep my cash game variance low, but against someone like this I’d rather wait for a better opportunity like A A-Q Q or perhaps even A K since I’m guessing he falls in love with any ace and you’d probably be dominating him.

I've seen few players do that move with ragged hands. There is a bet and a raise and they push allin - often enough, both original bettor and raiser hands are not strong enough to call the allin and they take the hand.
It is a stupid move - because if they do they called they are usually dominated (like in your case) and need a miracle flop to save them (like in your case) So they risk their entire stack for 6-7 BB.

The second hand, well, can't judge villain from this one hand, but usually over bets are small pocket pairs. Unless he his a clever maniac. Make loads of small raises with marginal hands and then make hugh raises with REAL hands.

I push the first hand without thinking. IF he has AA, then reload.

I fold the second hand for implied odds. We know that this guy is capable of putting all his $$ in with a marginal hand, so getting 8-1 on a call would be OK. The problem is that our stack isn't big enough to get the proper odds, so this is a -EV call.
