I think thats a standard raise from UTG at a shorthanded table. Atleast for me. But then again, I play almost anything from there. Laughing

So many players see an A and think they have a monster hand. Even AQ is not a particularly strong hand (as Jennifer Harman once said, when you look at your cards and see AQ, fold {not her exact words}!). Usually Ax will win you a small pot and lose you a big pot - when your A hits, you usually won't get a caller unless you're beat. When you do get called, you can be pretty sure you have the 2nd best hand (which was the case for the op - he just got lucky).

Maybe for full ring, but in short handed tables, you are not going to be seeing AK, AQ, or AJ every hand. You will not be running into these hands everytime like you would at a full table.

You're right, aaronw. I didn't notice the table size. My rule of thumb is with 6 players or less an A is worth playing, but you still need to be carefull with low to middle kickers.

Thanks everybody for your comments. I also don't think so that AT is a very strong hand, but as aaronw wrote, it may be quite strong in short handed games. I can take quite many hands with that (mostly on the flop, even if I miss, because I mostly get just 1 or 2 callers, and it's still quite probable that they missed too and I still remain to have the best hand). This time I got quite confused - I hit my ace, but was raised all in. I thought: if he beats me with the set or two pairs, why would he scare me so much? So I put him on draw and was quite surprised he flipped AQ (yeah, it really seldom happens at 6max tables like that).
Just to say, I often see many players raising with any ace, king or even queen at those tables (or with anything, lol!), it's sometimes funny to me.

I agree with this. I think AT is worth raising UTG in a short handed table. It wasn't the best hand in this situation, but it will be a lot. If it isn't the best hand, the pot can usually be won with a continuation bet.

You play Ax if you know how to fold it. if you don't you shouldn't play it and of course not raise with it.

Villain play it even worse. C/R allin on a draw heavy board like that is just plain stupid. Even if he had the AK it would be stupid. Especially in low levels. Players actually see the c/r as an attempt to steal and almost always call it with mediocre hands.

You got real lucky.

How is a check-raise all in on this board stupid? If villain gets a worse hand to call him, isn't that a good move?
