Paying to a set?

Posted Mon Jan 08, 2007 7:32 am GMT by MrDarling
I guess we all agree that one should almost never fold a set .

What about always paying to a set? What I mean is, should we ever give someone credit for a set?
Should we ever fold top 2 pair, Or a TPTK just because we think someone hit a set?

What are your thoughts?

Yes you should. Some players are only set-fishers and focus their entire game on this tactic, esp common amongst multitablers in full ring I think.

But there are variables in this like anything else. If you are deep or the pot is small and your opponent is 'tight' (tight isn't really the correct word but in lack of a better word) then you want really good hands before you tangle with him or - and this is important - draws. Draws will be much better versus people like that than semi-made hands like TP or OPs, cause if you are wrong with TP or OP then you are toast and if not you are probably not getting paid that much anyway, if you are wrong with a draw...well...you got outs.

But if you are not deep and the pot odds are good then think really hard before starting to fold for 'imagined' sets and 'its only a pair' ideas. One's poker earnings won't lie in tatters you because you make some close calls, it has obvious benefits to give a little action also.

Even though I've been thinking about this for a while, I finally posted it because a hand I was in.
6 handed table. I'm with ATo in position.
flop 52T rainbow. BB check, MP bet half pot I raise (not tat much, a little more then min raise) BB call MP fold.

MP claimed he folded AT suspecting I have a set of 2. But I told him what I had. He actually folded TPTK to an almost min reraise.

btw, Just folded a set. had 2's in position 3 to the flop. Flopped a set with 2 hearts. Bet the pot, both called. Turn another heart, made a sad blocking bet followed by a push and a call. I sadly folded. Didn't feel like I had the right odds to call. had invested like 6-7XBB into the pot and it was 50 more to call. Sure I had outs, but not odds (I think)

I rarely fold a set w/out a strong straight or flush board, but I often know that I am against a bigger set. The hard part is, you can beat a ton of hands w/ bottom set that people will play the same w/ top set or top 2 pair.

BTW-one of me least favorite bad beats is a flop of AJ5 w/ 55 and seeing a turn J and river A. OUCH.
