Long Stretches of Non-Poker Playing

Posted Tue Jan 09, 2007 6:30 pm GMT by MilkyPirate
I have experienced that over the course of my poker tenure, I go on stretches where I just don't play poker.

Most of the time it is work related. For example right now I just got back to school and have an essay due Friday and an exam on Monday. I havn't played poker since Sunday night and probably won't until Friday night. I don't like the idea of playing while working because I tend to lose focus on both my work and poker (a lose-lose proposition), so whenever I have work, I just don't play poker.

This is also true for during the summer, when I go on vacation or get a job at a summer camp. Every summer since I started playing poker, I have not played "serious" poker for all of July and half of August.

I find that these stretches can help re-energize some fatigue that may come after those "hardcore" sessions or days where you just go poker overkill (so you can analyze your play more and do other things). Of course I like playing poker...but how do you deal with these stretches of non-poker playing? Do you even have these stretches? If so, are they good or bad for you?

They're pretty much horrible for me. I consider myself a winning player with an average winrate.. I really just need to put in the hours.

Girls and school (even the winter break, for example) really cut into my hours. Which is fine, I guess, (I kind of like having some sort of a life) but I'm really impatient to "make it" in poker. I need to waste houuuurs to do it.

I'm in a poker-less stretch too now. Just a lot of school work and other stuff and simply not enough poker time. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, maybe a good time to get away for a while. The good thing about these streaks are that they can never last too long, and when you come back you're usually really into it due to a lack of play.
