KK- top set. how to get money? |
|
Posted Wed Jan 10, 2007 5:07 pm GMT by kingetje
so i raise preflop and get 3 callers of which 2 have postition on me. pretty scary
but then i flop top set. the problem: how the hell do i get any value from this hand? theres probably noone who has top pair as i hold almost all the kings in the deck. my best hope is someone who has a Q who gets frisky or something.
theres a flush and straight draw out there so not betting is just wrong right? what if everyone checks along and the turn is a Js? horrible!
so: how to get money here? pot is $14.

depends on your oppenents, but I'd probably say fire out a bet that looks like a CB and hope someone in position calls. Then when the turn comes a blank you can check making it look like you were full of crap on you CB. Cross your fingers hoping someone gets frisky at you with a semibluff or steal bet then either c/r or call and just lead out on the river...

Bet half the pot unless there is an extremely aggresive player who will bet if you check. A check looks suspect from the preflop raiser on this board, a CB is expected and gives no real information.
Outside of that you need reads on players to make other moves.

The only way to get paid off here is if someone has QQ, 77 or Ax of spades. Bet 1/2 - 2/3pot and cross your fingers.

I guess it looks like crosssing your fingers is going to be the general concensus

Anyone like an overbet? Like $20? A bit unusual, but I was thinking this might be the action most likely to get only what we most want: a call from a 2nd best made hand.

I was thinking just the opposite, the dreaded MIN BET.
Throw out $1 and someone drooling over a $14 pot will love to take a stab at that and at least re-raise you to $5-10. From there you can decide to re-raise or just call it. plus if you re-raise the min you can almost always expect to get a call.
If you are only called for the $1, put in an agressive bet on the turn. This does have one major down side: suckout possibility, but it can be successful.

I'd just bet whatever you've normally been betting after the flop.

Yup. If they all fold, you didn't lose a big pot. If you get a reraiser, thank your lucky stars and move in.

Absolutely. This is why continuation bets with air are so important. If you bet a standard amount, then sure everyone might fold, but you also don't do anything that looks out of the ordinary. What is important is that if you are called, you sometimes should check the turn with your good hands making it look like you have nothing. Then when someone fires, you can come over the top.
It is all part of a balanced strategy. You won't get paid off every time, but you will some of the time and will disguise your play on both monsters and bluffs.

There are 4 kings in the deck, and people chase straight draws, etc.
I'd bet 3/4 - Pot here ... lots of turn cards you don't like, except the queen of spades

You would have gotten paid off if you used my theory
Shame on you

Half pot is the absolute minimum you must bet to protect against draws. With three callers, I would tend to bet more, as not only is there a greater chance of someone coming along with you, but if the first person calls your 1/2 pot bet, then the rest are getting correct odds to call a flush draw.
If they all fold like this, then you weren't going to get any more out of them anyway. It's good to build pots with strong hands, and you never want your opponents to draw out on you when they made no mistake calling the flop bet in the first place.

what info do you have on the other players?
what info do they have on you?
what's your table image been like?

don't give this too much thought
at low stakes NL the only way to make money with big hands against weak passive players is to bet ... even at higher stakes, not many people will bet into an EP raiser who checked on a flop like that
just be glad that you'll double up when somebody has a pair of kings here
