Help me buy/build a new computer |

Recently I've had a good run of cards and placed 2nd in a 5k guaranteed tournament. With this influx of cash I'd like to get a new computer.
My main use is poker (in which case I hardly need and upgrade) and gaming with occasional work/programming.
I've built a machine once before and could probably do it again if the savings plus features made that a significantly better option. I haven't been keeping up with advancements lately but I'd probably do a large monitor 24" and duo core.
Any advice or thoughts would be most welcome.
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

You can either make yourself a better computer for the same amount of $ as a store bought one, or you can save youself around $100-400 by buying the parts yourself and building it.
As for advice on what parts, I cant recommend. I used to be big into that stuff 3-4 years ago and used to build my own rigs, but now Ive kinda fell outta the loop with that stuff.
My advice, def do it yourself if you know how to.

I just built a computer, first time doing so, had some help from a buddy on part selection, here's what I've got
AMD AM2 socket 4600+ duo core
2 GB Corsair RAM
ATI radeon x1950XT
big ass antec case
ultra connect 550w PSU
asus motherboard, m2n something, forgot
get everything from newegg.com, great support there, theyve got some nice rebate deals running often too
if you go with AMD, get the AM2 socket, its newer, etc, when looking at mobos id recommend two pci express 16x slots, so you can either do two graphics cards, or one graphics card and get a physx accelerator when that technology becomes widely used

This should probably be under non-poker talk.

I’d say 2 x 17” TFTs would be a better purchase if poker and programming are priorities. A single monitor if you care about your gaming.
The margin in self build has dropped a lot in recent years, unless you’re putting together a high end gaming rig or something usual like a low noise shuttle based media box, I’d say screw the effort and buy a Dell.
Cue hundreds of "OMG D3LL R CR@P!!!!!!!!! posts

I just bought a very similar system to Salche although I took the thinking man's option and went with an Intel dual core processor
I went with a x1950Pro for the gfx card as the extra £££ for the XT didn't seem worth it from what I read. I mainly use my PC for the Interweb, DVDs and poker so it didn't matter too much to me really either way.
Also - I highly recommend running two monitors. I've had a dually setup for a couple of years and for poker/multitasking it is perfect.

I currently use 2 monitors but the second monitor is really a 23'' HD LCD tv/monitor. It's pretty good as a tv but lacking as a monitor. So I figured a large monitor as the main for gaming and poker, my main monitor now as second and the tv one as possibly 3rd monitor.
I assume I'd need 2 graphics cards but not 3?
