I just started playing sit and gos last monday, and i put in $25 on pokerstars for my first deposit. On friday I was up to $95 by playing $6 sit and gos, but this weekend I hit a bad streak and went all the way back down to $40. Just now I played a $15 buy in and got all the way back up to $93. Do you guys have the same sort of variance in your play? This whole weekend I felt like i was never getting any good cards to work with preflop, and when i got shortstacked I would usually be ahead on an all-in showdown, but then would get beat on the turn or river.
Should I expect to steadily be increasing my bankroll if I play sit and gos right? Or, is it more based on luck? I play really tight until the third level, then I look to double up and tighten up again..

It's pretty irrelevant how you play if you can only afford ten'ish buyins.

well i just started playing, but i assume there is some skill involved even in these lower levels
and i'm glad you're optimistic, it's quite a good trait to have nowadays

If you have only ten buy-ins your skill level won't really matter much, that's what he is saying. Nomatter how good you are some run of bad luck will probably wipe your money to 0 with only ten buy-ins for SNGs.
Skill thus becomes irrelevant when not having a big enough comfort zone to ride the losing sessions.

What they are trying to say is : You need to play within your Bank Roll.
Even the best player in the world can lose 10 S&G's in a row. You have bad beats, bad luck and some times you make bad calls. That is why you need to play within your BR. For S&G I believe the comfort number lies around 20 X buyin . So if all you can afford for poker is $25 you should play the $1 S&G's or max the $2

well i put in $25 just to see what I could do with it. I'm up to $120 after a week, and I've been playing $6 buy ins. If i get up to $200 then i'll switch to $10 and higher. I guess maybe what i'm wondering is if you play S&Gs smart by not going out in the beginning, starting tight and then loosening up as the blinds go up, can you start to bring in steady income?

Is this a "can I make a few extra bucks" question or a "can I quit my day job" question?

Sure, of course you can. Lots of people already do. Whether or not you will is an entirely different question that no one here can answer.
