Running bad for the first time

Posted Mon Jan 15, 2007 8:01 am GMT by david_5675
He title pretty much explains it all. After joining FTR and with the very helpful knowledge of people here I was able to turn a good profit over the last 9000 hands. My bb/100 would range from around 4-7 depending on how I was running. I chalked that up to variance and figured hey this is not too bad.

Fast forward to the last couple of weeks. I cannot win a session. 13 out of my last 14 sessions have been in the red. I know I should not think of sessions individually but it wears on you when you come up big on a set and then your stack is slowly dwindled away. The thing is I am not making bad plays either. I think variance is just rearing its ugly head. I have started to get frustrated lately and have not been playing as much poker. Today on Bodog was ridiculous with all my quality hands running into sets, flushes etc. Hopefully this whole thing will clear up lately. I need to have patience and play through it.

It is real sad seeing that bb/100 way under 3 though.

Thanks for reading the rant, any feedback on advice to not go tilty and play my way through this would be appreciated.

take a break or move down limits to weather the storm

Check your hand histories for signs of a leak. See if you lowered your starting hand requirements. Also see if your taking advantage of position. Make sure your playing only good hands in EP and loosen up a bit in LP. If you have questionable hands post them to the forum and get feedback on them.

This stuff happens. See my post (Do I Need a Break) for a similar tale. I've had this multi-day/week downswing once before and came out of it then and have confidence that I'll come out of this one.

I don't personally like changing stakes but I'm stubborn also (gets me in a lot of trouble in NL tournys). BeerWench responded to my thread and suggested changing the game for a while. I did like that and spend a couple of days getting my poker fix on very low buy-in NL SnGs.

I do like UrAteUp's advice (and usually do) and I definitely found a big leak in my game. It wasn't the underlying cause of the downswing but it was adding quite a bit to it. Since my original post I sunk to a low of -$198 for January playing $1/$2 FL but last weekend clawed my way back to being down $105.

One of the best parts of this forum is being able to see what others go through and to be able to decide if your circumstances are 'normal' or a problem.

Good luck.

Analyse your play. If you feel you're making the right plays, just not getting there or getting drawn out on, you may need a change of pace. My longest downswing lasted for about 6 months. Oh, the agony! I switched up a bit and played some 7-stud and omaha-8 (I hate that game!) and when I went back to NLHE, found the game so much easier and I had a fresh approach.

I find it very hard to believe that someone can have a 6 month downswing. A week or 2, yes, but 6 months is difficult to believe.

Then don't believe it. Honestly, I could care less if you do or don't. Though the real question would be why I would bother making up such a stupid and inconsequential lie.

End of hijack. Carry on with OP's post.

It depends on how much you play really. If you are only playing once or twice a week for short periods, then it sounds a lot worse than it really is. Thats why I think it is generally better to say how long downswings were in amount of hands.

I honestly cannot say number of hands. I will say that at that time, I played usually 2-3 nights a week live or online (2 tables max at a time) after getting home from my jobby job. There were also occasional weekend home games and tourneys mixed in there. A good portion of that downswing continued when my frustration level went up due to that downswing. I got impatient and further regressed from my A-game. I'm stubborn and refused to stop and take a break or change pace as I am now suggesting to OP. It cost me a good deal of money and was moe frustrating than being called a liar by someone here because they have not shared the same experience. Well, almost as frustrating, anyway.

Now, can we move back to helping the OP? Thank you.
