Stick with the big names and you're safe. Smaller unknown programs... well there's been incidents in the past. I'll leave it at that.

2 biggest names in software right now are Poker Tracker and Poker Office. There's several guys here that use them, I'll leave it to them to give you their reviews/opinions. Poker Tracker is the mose widely used.

The use of these kinds of programs is permitted by the poker rooms. Common question as most build/keep a database of not only your stats, but the stats of players you've come across in the past. Very handy when you run into them again. The line that's not to be crossed (where these programs become illegal in most poker rooms) is when they use a community/common database. Poker Edge is such a program and is specificly named in partys forbidden applications. There arguement as to wether that should be permissible or not, but arguement aside the poker rooms say no.

Also, any ap that actually makes the action for you is technically a bot, and forbidden. Your ap can provide all the stats in the world, and post recommended actions for you to take but it can not take that action itself.

As to aps being free, many offer trials with option to unlock the limitations by depositing to new poker rooms through their affiliate programs. Not really a scam, just means of having affiliate pickup the cost: either way they make their money on it.

Final remark, if you're using some smaller lesser known aps please please do your homework on them first. There's some shady stuff out there. some may install adware or worse yet, spyware. It's happened before. Very basic security measure, run a decent firewall on your system, and if you catch the ap trying to establish an outbound connection kill it and do a system restore to a point prior to its installation (the only acceptable outbound connection attempt would be on the programs startup if it monitors for updates/patches to itself or during a license confirmation). Uninstall is not enough in these cases as it will likely not remove any hostile extras...

thanks a ton bud, quick question anything about holdem hawk the impulse part got to me there and i dl'd it.

From what I see of it, there's nothing that should make it illegal: it's just an odds tools. I don't know that it keeps any sort of player database outside of its current session.

It's a known ap, can be trusted. From the same company as the poker edge software noted above.

If you're serious about your long term game, I'ld recommend one of the afore mention aps instead as they will provide insight into your game and help you identify weak points/leaks.

Poker Tracker does cover Bodog.

Poker Tracker has several third party plugins to extended it. There's one for bodog ring games (states tourneys not supported, but if you're playing tourneys you need to run away from bodog anyways: blind structure issues, unless they've changed).

Poker Tracker supported sites.
Poker Office supported sites.

Im currently into sng's they have "beginner sng's" that pay 50% of people this way im trying to increase my bankroll, unless you have any other ideas? Im fine with any website just want that br up. only about 50$ right now.

Posted Tue Jan 16, 2007 11:23 pm GMT by vyni
Never played those, but with 5 of 10 paid... you're not making enough on your wins to really step the br up. Bodog used to be very fishy though, so it may be a good way to slowly build something up.

Unless it's changed, bodog blinds increase with every 10 hands. Early on in the tourney, it's no big deal. But when you get down 3 handed and heads up where very few hands actually play down to the river, 10 hands can be 3 or 4 minutes which starts to put alot of pressure forcing the action. Dumb arse luck becomes a greater factor in the end.

I'm not knocking on bodog btw: I started playing there but moved out after I started playing with real money because of the blind issue.

What do you play on now?

Posted Wed Jan 17, 2007 12:13 am GMT by BigSlick34
Im somewhat tight agressive, what do you suggest. 5.25 tournies payouts 5-10-25 Or my beginner 9$ 8-12-16-20-24 What gives me best chance at increasing bankroll surely?

Structure doesn't really insure anything.

Posted Wed Jan 17, 2007 8:43 am GMT by BigSlick34
I mean for tournies and sng's it said just for ring games aaron.

2 words stand out in posts above that need noted:
surely - nothing's going to be sure.
insure - see surely.

The pace at sngs in most other poker rooms makes for better play. Usually 8, 10, or 12 minute blind levels. Most have turbos sngs as well, where the blinds move at 4 or 5 minutes. Alot of people like the turbos, but I personaly don't.

When the blinds climb too fast... well once you hit that 400/800 mark with only 15k chips in play, it starts to get fugly imo. Blinds and antes weigh in at almost 10% of the chips in play... luck takes over. I had a bodog sng make it to 800/1600 once and it was just rediculous.

Again thats just if they're still doing the 10 hands levels. 1500 starting and blinds started at 5/10 (most other places they start off at 10/20 and a 1200 stack at lower levels). I havent gone there in a long time so it may be different. Please let us know. I glanced at the site and see the scheduled tourney structures and they're time based of course as they're mtts, but I don't see anything about the sngs.

Recommended place to go, right now since you're a US player you're limitted. PokerStars is the easy answer as they're the new knig of the hill. The 5+.50 and 10+1 sngs are a breeze. Which brings up another bodog issue based on your post: a dollar is too high a buyin for an 8 dollar sng (tourney fee should be max 10%, and less at higher buyins), and those payouts you qouted are horrible. I'm sure they attract alot of the fishies but to finish first and walk away with 15 profit to a 9 dollar game... very poor imo.

Do not believe this man! Donkage applies in such cheap games making them less beatable than $30+ SnGs for sure.

Posted Wed Jan 17, 2007 6:32 pm GMT by vyni
lol true, but this is common at all poker rooms.
Cheaper the game, greater the donk factor. I can't believe that a stars 5 or 10 could be fishier than a bodog game at same levels.

But in the longer term, if you can't overcome the donk issue then you're probably going to get yourself into trouble at the higher buyins. To just jump to a 30 or 50 dollar buyin to avoid that lucky fish who keeps catching the damn river... you may find the water's deeper than you expected.

imho Smile

I recommend (spam) to you. You pay nothing for it which is made up of two parts: real-time assistant and post-game analyzer. I think both are good enough to help you make right decisions on the table and study your play and your opponents.
But one thing is that it can not support many poker rooms.
If you are interested in it, go to the site of (spam).

Very very tired of that one being spammed around here. To the makers and spammers of (spam): congrats your product name is now in the censored word list.
