Has anyone tried one of these new electronic poker tables that are making their way into the casinos? Anything to report?
I believe there are only a handfull of places which have them in the UK but perhaps this is likely to grow over the coming year?
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? I haven't heard about electronic poker tables. Care to explain how they work?

They're planning to put some in Montreal here as well. Here, the news has brought both positive and negative reactions. Some say finally, the others say that's not real poker (same comments we heard about online poker).
I say, for us anyway, it's a step towards having "real" poker in our casino.

See by yourself.

There is an ePoker room at Hollywood Park here in LA, they have electronic tables spreading both cash games and one table SNGs. At some point I want to head there and check it out.
Phil plays at HPC alot, I wonder if he's seen them?

Basically, it operates in a similar fashion to an online poker room however you can see everyone's faces. It's essentially dealer and chip free 'live' poker.
I believe you deposit and withdraw credit via your credit debit card when you sit down/leave.
In the UK, there's a casino in Newcastle that has one and one in London around Paddington Station I believe.

Going to the casino to play online. Sounds fun.

It's not online - just electronic. There's still 10 people sat around a table playing against each other.
I think it's just more of a cost cutting exercise since it would save on dealer wages + you get more hands per hour so greater rake (though in the UK the tendency is for a flat).
Also, saves on tips (which I despise)

No chips to shuffle, or make castles out of, or pick up in large stacks as if to bet to intimidate my opponents? Pshaw. Doesn't sound like a barrell of laughs to me.
Though, sadly, I can see all of us about 30 years from now talking about "the good old days" when there were human dealers and real cards and real chips.

Yeah, without the cards and chips, doesn't sound like much fun.
10 people hunched over a screen trying to keep the person next to them from looking at their cards.
The poor bastards with reading glasses that reflect their screens to the person across from them.
The idiots with sunglasses that reflect their screens to the person across from them.
Wheeeeeee, where do I sign up.

Silly question but how do you keep your cards secret from the guy next to you?

I was just about to ask the same thing. I would assume they would probably have privacy screen detector things that are made for laptops. I am not sure though.

thats not for me. Real people, handling real cards/chips, hand movements, all would be gone from this.
Maybe they could have a few tables, but this better not get too popular, especially for those who like the experience of playing cards

The cards are on your screen face down, you have to "cup" them, like you would real cards, while I believe pressing a nearby button that "reveals" the corners of the cards.

Ugh, I don't think I like this idea. Like others have stated, when I play live I enjoy the chips, the cards and the dealer.

What about when someone does something wrong? People could be cheating this fairly easily? The dealer keeps order of the table a lot of the times at lower buyin games, would it work without someone there to keep track of everyone and make sure nobody is cheating?

I found a long thread on 2+2 started by the manager of the ePoker room at Hollywood Park, he answers a lot of questions about how the electronic tables work. There is a guy named Rick who played a couple of sessions there and posts his thoughts about playing on these tables.
Nothing earth shattering, pretty much the pros and cons that you would expect, but interesting. For me, one big plus would be being able to buy into a $1/$2 NL game for $100, since the max buy-in anywhere else in L.A. is $40.
The thread is here.

The little charming things that make up live games would disappear, but still...I'm also guessing it would save time, people won't be able to bet wrong or ask for counts which can take ages and I think the playing would generally be speed up.
For me the reason of playing live is feeling the cards, but for someone who just wants to get get as many hands as possible I think this could be neat.
