how do you handle this?

I host a weekly tourny of about 25 people. 50$ buyin. Father and son sitting at the the table, father on the button son in the SB. Blinds are 10/20. Father limps and the son raises to 60. Father calls. Flop comes A,and two rags. The hand is checked. Same goes for the turn and river. The hand is checked and the players reveal their cards. Father has AA while the son has AK. No draws on the board. My question is how to handle this? I consider this cheating. I've had this tourny every week for about 2 years without problems, but yesterday there were some mumbling going on about this. What's your advice?

This is a tricky situation for sure and one that needs to be addressed. In this case, it is very obvious that they were saving each other chips but in other cases it may not be quite so clean cut so I would be wary about wading in and ruling that you cannot soft play a friend/relative.

One option is to keep the players apart but the problem with that is when you have a STT or two players at the final table are related or good friends.

Tbh, there is little you can do because if they are so wet that they want to play like this, you are on to a loser whichever angle you play. Personally, I'd be going all out to knock my old man out of any poker tourney Laughing

playing soft against people you know is just sad... I play in home tourneys as well as at the casino with my good friends regularly... you're there to have a good time and win some money. If they're playing the game they should be ready to lose. The only time I'd feel bad for felting a friend would be say they checked their set to me and I bet my inside straight draw which hit on the river... even then all I'd do is maybe buy him a chicken finger or something afterwards..

This is softplay and a clear cut form of cheating. Since it is YOUR game make it very clear to both that soft play and chip dumping (which can't be far behind) are unacceptable and if you see any other signs of cheating from them you will disqualify them from the tourney w/ no refund. If it wasn't your game call the floor person or host over and explain to them what is going on.

We host at my house every now and then a low-limit couples game, where all the poker players bring their gfs, fiances, etc...We usually have around 6 or 7 couples play, but anyway, my buddy sean is in a hand with his gf, they where both late, gf is cutoff and raises with sean on the button making a re-raise. sb and bb muck. gf calls the raise. Flop hit JJQ, gf bets out and sean raises. GF thinks about pushing and sean goes, you dont want to do that. So she re-thinks her moves and calls and they check it down. Sean holds JJ and gf has QQ.

All the guys at the table agreed we would let it slide because it was a $10 buy in and we were just having some fun, but everyone also agreed that if that ever happened anywhere else, whoever was hosting the game would have all the right to not to invite them back to play ever again and is definetly a form of cheating.

In a cash game it wouldn't be a big deal because there isn't any equity in knocking people out of the game, so unless they are bet-raise-call-reraiseing to make people fold, it's not an issue.

In a tournament, AK would have busted so yeah that's balls. Kill those sons-a-bitchezzz.

This is bad, but not terribly bad. Really the father is only hurting himself here. Obviously somebody will get upset later and lose a coinflip to the son and say "if he lost that one pot, he would've have had as many chips now" or if they win a big pot off the father they might say "he could've had a lot more chips, which could be my chips now"

Talk to them about it, let them know that you're serious about the game and try to give them an example of you and your dad not softplaying each other.
