CHEAT PROGRAMS??? Myth or real?

Posted Mon Jan 22, 2007 6:17 pm GMT by luckcounts
I've been playing online poker for about a two years now. I have heard alot of speculation over cheat programs..... also you see websites or the odd ebay auction selling pokerbots and programs that claim they will show you your oppenets hole cards or play out the flop, turn, river in advance... b4 it happens. I DO NOT CONDONE CHEATING but it concerns me that if these programs work i may be cheated Sad . It honestly sounds like one of those "get rich qucik" scams I have searched a few fourms but it I haven't read any posts about this topic...... any1 had any expirences with this?

The most effective way of cheating in poker is to set up 5-6 accounts and get 4-5 of them to sit at the same table. Basically anyone who sits down at that table will lose their stack.

Poker bots are programs that literally play ABC poker, going by odds, ect ect. Bots are better than most people that play online, they never do anything outrageous though. When i was multi-tabling one day someone called me a bot. I didn't reply and ran up a couple of successful bluffs after that :D

If the sites were being hacked I'd feel more worried about the bank account info getting stolen or the CC info. Why slowly take my stack when you could clean out my bank account or charge a few grand to my CC?

because I think cleaning out someone's acct. would be a little more obvious then cheating it out of them through game play.....

Hacking the sites themselves would be a ludicrous undertaking to say the least. Hacking into poker players personal computers have happened and will continue to happen as long as people (esp bigtimers) don't protect themselves against invaders. It is the typical bank scam, the hackers target the customers computers not the bank's systems.

Normally I'd suspect such hacking attempts would go directly after the money and not bother to 'cheat' in the poker game itself as it would be a nuisance, plus you would be prolonging the exposure of your invasion on the computer which is never a good thing (for the cracker).

As for bots they exist, but as exit_music said, the majority of them are not very effective.

So in the end just make sure to protect your computer.

Any attempt to hack the personal computers of ordinary low to medium stakes players would require a multitude of attacks/targets to be worthwhile, and such large scale attacks will almost universally look for an allready well-known security weakness in the target machines, so updated machines should be safe in almost all cases -for the cracker/thief, attacking more secure home machines actually make very little sense as you would prefer your targets to have low priority/knowledge on computer security as that would minimize the chance of being caught).

To successfully attack a gambling company which has been security audited properly (information which should be found on its website) would be a stupid undertaking as the skill level required 1.) Is very high 2.) The penalty would be severe.

Attacks against gambling companies regularily take place as DOS attacks through zombie hosts at their service to shut them down, after which the company will be blackmailed to pay up a certain sum or get its service shut down on particularily busy gambling days. Intrusion in itself should not be a real concern.
