worst downswing of my life

Posted Tue Jan 23, 2007 1:20 am GMT by supafrey
Chances are you didn't know, but I'm currently on the worst losing streak of my very short (2+ years) attempts at this game. About 45% of my roll (from my absolute high point) is gone. I'm kind of numb (I dont feel bad/good) but I definitely notice the auto-tilt that happens when i sit down (i get impatient). I'm actually unsure of what to do.

I may need to take a poker break and take whatever roll i have (over 100 buyins for $200, atleast, thankfully) and semi retire for a few weeks/months. I'm shaken, to say the least, and I'm having trouble settling on a +ev game for me to grind out.

That sucks man. Sorry to hear that. How do you usually deal with these downswings? Take a break? Play through it? Move down in limits? Maybe if you stopped open limping UTG with Q2. Laughing

historically I've moved down, i suppose. When 400 failed the first time (celeb, about 2-3k down pretty quick) I went back to 5 tabling 100nl. Went back up to 200nl shortly thereafter, then made jumps to 400, 600 and then 1k fairly reasonably. I was losing on some sites at certain stakes (Pokerstars 200nl has probably taken more money from me than any level in any game, excluding maybe $2200+ HU sngs... and it's close if that) while beating other sites quite reasonably ($450 and 750 on tribeca).

I'm noticing a significant leak in my play, as of late. I play quite solidly for a short while, get ridiculously "coolered" for 1-1.2k .. then about 30 minutes pass and I'm down to -2k or so, almost every time. Why am I losing so much money so quickly after bad beats? I'm assuming it means some quasi-tilt thing... I hope I don't have to do something lame like "take a break" for a few minutes after 1k suckouts...

Sorry to hear Pavel... I've been having a downswing myself. Had one last year at this time also. Maybe it's something about the winter...

You can make a good living multi-tabling NL400. If your bankroll is 20K these limits should be fine, unless the downswing continues, if you go below 15K you should think about grinding it out in NL200. But 2/4 seems like the perfect place for you to pwn some suckafish. It might seem like a defeat after playing 5/10, but you just have to get over that.

On Tilt

Tilt has many causes and kinds, but it has only one effect. It makes us play bad. It makes us do things we wouldn't do if we were at our very best. And that's how I want to define it, exactly like that. Tilt is any deviation from your A-game and your A-mindset, however slight or fleeting.

...

And so we arrive at the three dimensions of tilt: frequency, duration, and depth. How often do you deviate from your A-game? How long does it last? And how far below your A-game do you go?

Wow, you've been playing poker only 2 years and you got to that level.
You are somewhat of a natural talent.

now, as for the tilt thing, and remember these comments are meant with respect. If by any chance I totally missed the point, please disregard.

Any way, to the point. I think you have some self control issues. You tend to forget your A game , lose patient and jump the gun. I think your EGO plays more often then you.
I say that seeing your behavior here on the site. You'll often deliver a nice cynical statement, or one of your one liner. Then when ununderstood or replied to with some silly personal remark you'll go down the route of "My gun is bigger then you" (really didn't want to write Dick did I )

Like stated I think you are a brilliant player. And am still shocked that you play this game for so little time. I understand you don't care about the money, but I think you do care when you lose. I think it is important to you to prove (At least to your self) that you are better then most and probably often will try to outplay people when its obvious they have a decent hand, or even worse, are actually not good enough to lay down 3rd button weak kicker to your obvious representing The flush str that just hit the board.

Like Seed told Gus on the Poker Superstars : You are out playing yourself (though Gus ended up winning that game )

Maybe its time to take a short break, center your self and come back to be a winning player.

Good luck

Danny

Sorry to hear about the down swing Sup'. Sad

Why not take a break from on-line cash games for a little while, then when you feel like coming back to the game try a few MMTs or some B&M play just to give your mind a bit of a warm up stretch?

This kind of thing can start to spiral if you're not careful.
