i have a good social life still and am healthy and do other normal things but i think i am playing way to much

so can anyone recommend anything to stop this.

i know this is very bad so can anyone give ideas for what to do

like set amount of time per day like what do you guys do to stop yoursleves from playing poker all day everyday as it is so easy to do.

i am trying to get into this " i own poker, poker does not own me "

as i feel at the moment it kinda does

thanks a lot guys would really appreciate some ideas of what you do to get over the addictiveness of the game.

(p.s. i dont play all day losing money , i am a winning player and end most sessions up)

thanks Rolling Eyes

Go cold turkey for a weak.

Then start slowly by playing only twice a weak.

Say sorry to everyone you offended - oh wait, thats from another addiction problem.

Max yourself out at a certain number of hands to play - roughly - per day. Don't treat poker as a stimulant or a time killer or whatever. Treat poker as a business, keep records, ect. I don't know how much you are playing right now, but roughly 1K hands per day isn't too unreasonable. Just have a plan, and when you are not playing poker - do something completely un-poker related. Schedule poker into your day and if you are too busy to play poker in a certain day, take it out of your schedule. Don't play when you are very tired or have more important comitments. Don't play if you are depressed, especially if you are depressed about losing a big hand. Put your tables on sit-out mode, grab a cigarette or a coffee or some sushi. That's how you take control of poker.

You could always go to one of the blackjack tables and risk it all on red, or black (whichever you are partial to). You'd be a little better than even money to lose your roll. That should take care of any problems you are facing atm.

Go on a horrendous losing streak and see how much you want to play then. In other words, join my world.

That has been working for me also.

To the OP: First, congratulations on having the balls to own up to the situation in public and the brains to recognize the problem. I can definitely relate (except for the brains part). I fully recognize the addictive hold that poker has over me and recognize the hunger I have when I want to play or when I'm about to play. And even though I've been a winning player (until December, at least), it has cost me time I should have spent on other things, including work. (My job lets me work at home regularly if I want to.) It has also cost me sleep for the nights when I stayed up an extra hour (playing poker) instead of going to bed.

I've generally been disciplined about planning when I'm going to sit down and play for an hour or more. My real problem has been the "I'll just play a few hands" or "Just one SnG" and also staying up until 1:00 AM instead of 11:45 (when Jay Leno's monologue is over--my historic bedtime for 25 years).

I'm attacking the "Just a few hands" problem the same way I'm attacking my habit of calling down with a good hand when I know I'm beat--I just try to recognize what I'm doing and say "No!". Mixed results so far but some progress. Kind of in line with Exit's comments is also recognizing that many of my advantages as a good player are surrendered at a brief table where I don't get to see a lot of hands. I recognize that these are essentially slot machine sessions, not poker sessions.

The "Up too late" problem is tougher for me because even if I quit poker and go to bed I'll often not fall asleep (a different problem). This is so pervasive that it is easy to rationalize "If I'm not going to sleep anyway then I may as well play poker." The problem here is twofold. First, I MIGHT have fallen asleep and, second, I'm playing when I'm not alert.

One interesting observation about myself is that I have absolutely none of the "hunger" I experience with poker toward any form of gambling.

I've got no specific advice for you except to seek professional help if you really think you need it. We both may.

last month I played poker every day, at least 4-5 hours a day. And yeah, it does seems like it becomes quite obsessive, borderline addiction .

If at least I would make some money in it - it wont be that bad. Alas, I don't even break even. (but at least I manage to keep from going busto)

So yesterday I manage to play enough point to qualify for Fulltilt silver iron man freeroll and decided its enough playing for this month.

Today was my first day without poker , so far its ok. No serious shaking or un controlled vomiting, yet!

How does your journey goes?

Danny

I find that if I win a decent amount of money early in the session I lose interest in playing. It's the days that I'm losing money that I can't seem to stop playing. Everyday this past week I have won 1/2 or even a whole buy-in within the first 100 hands, and I lost interest and found other things to do.

If one would wish to, there are software aps out there to cut your pcs off from poker and gambling sites. Little 'self exclusion' programs. Can't testify to the effectiveness of any of them, but they're out there. Force ones self to go cold turkey.

I cheated last night and played one S&G.. At least I won it Smile

Played another one just now , finished 3rd. AQ allin PF vs AK.
nice flop 8JQ - but a K on the turn.

Maybe I should have just called his pf raised then push the flop regardless...

He made a big PR raise which I took to weakness..
