weekly trip to the casino revealed this hand
this is 1/2 NL 200$ max buy in I'm sitting with about 460$ in chips...
I'm OTB with 55, UTG raises to 6, 3-4 callers to me so I call looking for the set...
flop comes 5 6 3 two spades...
checks to UTG raiser who bets out 20$... she's fairly agressive but not willing to let pairs to too easily (i know this when she called me down with 7s to my 6s with 4 overcards on the board)...
EP smooth calls... average college players.. solid doesn't get too tricky..
folded to me... not wanting to give too good odds for the flush I raise it up to 80, UTG calls all in for like 70 and EP calls...
turn is a 2....
EP checks so I bet out 200$ to give bad odds... EP calls
river is a red 10
EP who has me covered moves in for my last 180... I had to think about it for a while... knowing neither of THESE players has a 4 unless EP called with 44, both pockets 6s and 10s could be possible how the hand played out... I looked over at the guy and told him "well there's only 4 hands out there that got me beat... and if you got one of them then your welcome... call.. I got the set"
UTG raiser shows QQ for the overpair and EP shows 22 for the bottom set... I show my higher set to rake in a pot totaling 1011$... one pot in 1/2 NL over 1k... that's unheard of..
after that hand I have over 75% of all the chips at the table.. 5 players left no one had more than 150$ in chips so I just collected my stacks and hit the blackjack tables

i had to think about it for a while... everyone at the table was kinda laughing at me for all the painful faces I was making while I tried to figure the hand out... in the end I figured EP for a higher set or a flush draw (flop was 2 spades) but in the end I don't think I could fold a set in that situation getting 4-1 for the call

Ugggghh pooly played, you know blackjack is a -EV game unless you've got a team working with you, right?

Or you count cards!

I'm trying to learn how to count cards... well practice counting them... it's hard to keep track of a full table and either not count out loud and not make it obvious...
basically my strategy is 3 fold...
1) don't hit on anything over 14 unless you feel you have to (this relies heavily on the dealer always busting..)
2) start at min bet and increase your bet by 50% max of twice.. (10$, 15$, 25$) so when you go on a little rush you maximize your winnings...
3) try to socialize more than play at the table... seat selection is important for this... try to sit next to either an attractive person of the opposite sex or some chatty high roller...
oh... when all else fails sit anchor... you're usually not taking the bust card so people will be nice to you...

Have you been successful at playing blackjack while trying to count cards?

i haven't even attempted to do it at the casino... besides, just counting cards doesnt make you a winning player
