Gemaco plastic cards - are they worth it?

Posted Fri Jan 26, 2007 11:40 am GMT by pokerTim
I just ordered a two deck set of Gemaco plastic cards, poker size, regular index. I have been using paper cards for a long time. Are plastic cards ( gemaco in this case) worth the money? They seem pretty expensive.

Never used Gemaco, but if they're anywhere near as good as KEM or Copag, then they're definitely worth it.

Thanks Sean. I hear that plastic cards are supposed to last a long time, possibly years.

I have two decks of KEMs and two decks of Copags that have seen pretty heavy usage over the past couple years, and they're no worse for wear.

so these KEMs I keep reading about... are these plastic cards? aren't they like 20$ a piece... are they actually worth it?

No, I obviously decided to mention them in this thread questioning the value of plastic cards simply as a goof, and in no way should my comments be seen as an endorsement of any manufacturer, material, width, index size or design of any playing card; nor should my comments be taken as a declaration of fitness for a particular use within a particular context, be it poker, bridge, go fish, old maid or cutting up vegetables.

Dude...what part of my post didn't answer your question?

I have KEMs, and another guy in my group has Copags. The Copags are slippery and are a bit more difficult to shuffle and deal, but are less expensive. I'd recommend either.

where's the best place to pick up a set?... can you order right from the website?... if not ebay?...

They don't sell directly to the public. Do a Google search for KEM or Copag, and you'll find plenty of places that sell them.

galderon: I've found the Copags work well when you've got a lot of humidity. The KEM's can get sticky in that kind of environment.

I've got old Kem's from before the USPC buyout and they lasted me for three years. Now they don't shuffle very well, even after cleaning them. So a few months ago I bought some Copags and some Dal Negros. The Copags are a little more slick like Sean said, but you get used to it pretty quick. The Dal Negros seem a little stiffer and have sharper edges, but are also pretty good.

Probably $25-30 for two decks. But you'll save soooooo much money compared to replacing paper decks that it's a no-brainer.

Don't pay more than low $20s + reasonable shipping... they're all over for that. Kems no longer command the prices they did when the poker boom was peaking and they were pretty much THE premium card available in the US, plus the whole buyout shortage thing is long gone.

For the plastic card noob I suggest Dal Negros because they're the most like paper cards that I've used. Couple bucks cheaper than Kems too.
