First tourney NIGHTMARE

Posted Sun Jan 28, 2007 1:33 am GMT by wavenoob
Hello all,
New to the forums thought id share my horror story of my first tourney i played tonight. It was a small tourney in northern Kentucky that a work buddy brought me to. My hold'em play is all online so when i heard we had to deal our own card my nerves were shot for the night. Trying to remember the rules and how to deal and not look like a total noob.

So I start with the button deal my first had fine. Folded the next 2 hand all is going well. Next had i get 5 6 suited so i thing ok ill call the blind and play. deal lays the flop down 99k So me being nervous sees the 9's as 6's since im just blind i guess. Everyone check the turn so i follow suit hoping to check/raise someone into a big pot. The turn card come no help to me but still thinking i have my 6's i end up all in. river card is a six and i realize the error of my way but im sitting on 2 pair 6's and 9's until the other player turn over his pocket 9 leaving him with trip 9's so 4 hands and 13 min later im driving home.

The good side is i had fun learned a lesson and will be back next month.

Has anyone else had a hard time making the transition from playing online poker to playing live tournaments.

I don't know what it is but in live games I have a very hard time telling 9's and 6's apart. It's the damnest thing...

Welcome to the forum.

It's good to see that one mistake is not going to stop you from playing. We've all made those mistakes.

I was in a tournament and had J3 Spade in the big bind when everyone folded to me. The next hand, I got K5 offsuit and for some reason had it in my head that I was still holding the J3. The board came out 33X and I check/raised the flop, bet pot on the turn with one caller and pushed on the river. I got lucky because he folded on the river. I did something that I don't normally do and flipped my cards to show my trips only to be surprised to see that I had K-high. It looked like a monster bluff and tilted the other player. It was pretty funny. If he had called, I'd have been out of the tournament kicking myself for not looking at my hand again like I usually do.

Hahaha! Thats a hilarious story! I don't play any live poker (with the exception of the odd home game) so no stories for me.

Thanks for the welcome guys. Glad to hear that other people have horror stories from live play. I looked at the 9 over and over again to make sure i was betting my set of 6's I cant wait to play again though. I'm currently looking for a more frequent tourney this one is only once a month.

I play live once a week now but when I first started, I had trouble remembering what my pocket cards were, because now they are face down on the table. I thought I had 10 A of clubs, hit my flush and went all-in, only to turn over Ac 10s how embarrassing is that. I now look every time before I make a bet or fold.

The worst part about my mistake was admitting what i did. One guy at the table looked up and asked what in the world i was betting.

played my first casino game a few months back.......tough transition from online.....nerves a plenty.
lots of things to learn....like how to sign up. Laughing
turned the wife onto poker last year and now we are getting ready to play our first casino tournament...we're pumped.

I am the opposite of you.

I cut my teeth playing live cash games, when I jumped into the game online my life was filled with stories of many many misclicks, I've probably dropped $100 in misclicks.

thanks......actually finding this site has already helped my game.
It has also taken the wifes game to the next level.....I think she thought I was kidding when I was explaining table position....until she read it in black and white.

one week away.

trying several different play methods and "shifting gears" in my play.
online response is varied....I have to believe a live game will yield different results yet again.
I'll be going in with my wife, one of my employees and a good friend.....I hope we meet at the final table.

Very Happy

What casino will you and your wife/friends be playing in? Maybe someone on these boards can give you a "heads up" on the players/structure...

Just got back the this months tourney. We had 64 players on 8 tables this time. I played very tonight maybe a bit to tight. I only took 2 bad beats but had alot of fun. Had one had suited K-Q spades so called the BB and saw the flop. flop is spade spade heart. player next to me bet 500. its a work buddy so i called hoping to catch a flush figured my odds where good. Missed my flush and lost about 650 and made me short stacked. Played even tighter after that. ,y buddy took a HUGE beat against a set of queens next had he goes all in with crap i called with suited Q J and crushed him so atleast i knocked him out. About 30 min i ended up all in with K Q off suit against A Q and lost to a A on the river.

I love this small time tourney play just wish i could find a weekly game

Casino Windsor has a daily tourney for $50, also
on the last friday of every month they have a $500 tourney.
however they don't run the $50 and the 500 on the same day........ Confused

other than going back to the ATM to play the 500, my other option was a sattellite table for free entry to next months 500 tourney for a $65 buy in.....passed on that as well.

My wife and one of my buddies were not able to make it and so I just played the 1/2 table, and did pretty good in my opinion....brought home 1K

wife was pretty happy and I think she is growing more confident in her playing and will play a tourney within the next few weeks.
