Hello Poker Community!
After I read my first poker book, I want to make the first small steps online. I am considering Pokerroom, but I am not sure how much I should deposit. They offer a 20% deposit bonus up to 100$. To get them, I must earn 7 player points for each dollar during 60 days.
Having never played online, I don't know how much I should deposit. If I deposit 500$ I would get the full bonus, 100$. But I also need to get 700 player points during the first 60 days and I don't know how much this is (how many hours do I have to play to get them).
What do you say? Is it better to deposit only 100 dollar and get 20$ bonus, or is it easy enough to get the 700 player points for the full bonus. I also read about some problems with those points lately in their forum, is this a widespread issue? I cannot post there unless I start earning player points, which I cannot do before making my deposit.
If you can recommend a better server for starters, please post a link and explain why you consider it better for a beginner. The availability of small tables, maybe even lower than $1/$2, would be nice.
thanks in advance,
Temple Guard

pokerroom has a really slow clear rate. I think it's somewhere in the area of 1$ an hr. if you've never played online before there are some sites that'll make it a lot easier for you to maximize your bonuses. to start of I'd suggest party poker, they have a very easy to clear bonus i think 8$/hr if i'm not mistaken... if you want to know a good site PM me and i'll send you the one I use...

I say deposit as much as you can afford and willing to lose. Lets say you do deposit the full amount but do not manage to clear the full bonus - so what , you'd still get more bonus then if you deposit the minimum.
If you are new to poker though, there is a good chance that you will lose your first couple of deposit, so even if you do deposit the full amount, I suggest you play the minimum levels.
When you sign to a new site, make sure you sign via a Rake Back site.
btw, there are sites that offer better then 20% first deposit bonus. Some offer 100% up to $600 - a hugh different if you are willing to deposit so much.
Good luck and may the cards fall your way

Thank you for the feedback! 100% bonus sounds amazing, can you recommend such a site? And could you explain what a "Rake Back" site is. I am familiar with the term rake, but never heard of rake back.
If I understood the rules correctly, I have no chance to get part of the bonus. If I deposit 500$ and get only half the player points required for the 100$ bonus, I get nothing instead of 50$. Or has anyone playing on Pokerroom experienced something different?
I am comfortable with a deposit up to 1000$. How long can a beginner expect to play with this amount of money on a small table until everything is gone?

ok a couple problems with the other posts...
first of all sites are different when it comes to bonuses.. when you make a deposit the site (IE pokerroom, full tilt etc) they have certain requirements that you have to complete to get the bonus (ie playing a certain amount of hands, generating a certain amount in rake, or playing x many raked hands)..
these things that you have to do to clear the bonus varies from site to site.. on some sites it is really difficult to clear the bonuses but on other sites it's really easy.. for example on Party poker you just have to play 5 raked hands (total rake has to be over 0.25$) for every dollar of your bonus (ie to clear a 100$ bonus you have to play 500 raked hands)..
whereas on fulltilt for every 1$ in rake generated you get 1 point and 1 point is then worth about 0.06$ towards your bonus... right there you can see there is going to be a big difference in how fast you get those bonuses..
many sites do the math and break down the bonuses into what they call clear rates... this makes it really easy for you to decide which sites you want to play at...
party poker offeres a deposit bonus of 20% up to 100$
fulltilt offers a deposit bonus of 100% up to 600$
full tilt sounds better right?...
party you have to play 5 raked hands for every 1$ in bonus so 500 raked hands for 100$...
fulltilt you have to get 16.67 points for every 1$ in bonus so 166.7 points for 100$..
on party poker you will clear your bonus at about 8$/hr/table
on fulltilt you will clear at 0.75$/hr/table
so to clear the bonus on party you have to play about 12.5 hrs on 1 table
whereas on fulltilt you have to play about 134 hrs on 1 table..
now which one would you chose... this is the main thing you need to keep in mind when chosing a bonus to clear
I can send you the site to learn more about the different bonuses and clear rates but do plz keep in mind to use the link to the sites that are provided by THIS site...

sorry I don't mean to put anyone down but if I'm looking at the right bonus you have to earn 120 points for each 1$ in bonus?... that's like 24 cents an hr... is there any way you can get the requirements changed?

I recommend Full Tilt. Their bonus is pretty easy to clear, plus it is cleared in $20 increments.

did you even read any of the posts?
the full tilt bonus is not easy to clear at the lower lvls... i know this for a fact as it was one of the first bonuses I had to push through... then I saw the light

If that is directed towards me, yes, i did read the posts. I was just giving my opinion as well. That is still allowed, correct? lol. I was just saying that I found it was pretty easy to clear and that it is cleared in $20 increments which may be an added bonus to some people.

to take a step away from what seems to be the norm today I just want to apologize... the tone in my last post is completely off from what I meant..
I agree the 20$ increments is a nice plus seeing as it will take a while to get the whole 600$... I just wanted to point out with the ease of clearing some of the other bonuses there are many other options available...
one thing i forgot to mention is that you do have to watch out for some of the smaller sites as they don't offer a very large selection of tables to play at as well as, I think it's crypto network, you have to wait for that damn ecash number to be mailed to you, which could take a week as well as some site do charge to withdrawl...
in the end my suggestion is find a site that you want to be your home base. I use pokerstars with their large selection of games and tourneys and I withdraw my money and move it to site that are offering good bonuses... I may jump around from time to time but I always come home to stars...

I think it's 80pts/$1:
The first deposit signup bonus is automatically awarded to your account in five dollar increments for every 400 TitanPoker Points awarded.
If the rake is under 50 cents, you get a point. If it's between 50 cents and a buck you get two points etc etc in (roughly) 50 cent intervals up to 8 points for a max rake hand ($3)
I guess like any bonus, it's not that easy to clear at the lower limits.

No worries, bud. To add to what you were saying, some sites have a minimum stake at which you can clear the bonus. Some sites it is $25NL and on some sites I don't think there is a minimum. So that is one thing you have to look at as well.
