Vegas Report

I can get into more details if anyone wants, but here is a quickie.

I probably sat down 12-15 times and only got up a loser once. That was after just 20 minutes of 1/2 NL waiting for a 10/20 limit game and my $20 raise w/ a straddle on and several limpers w/ QQ ran into a short stack w/ $44 and AA. He moved, I knew I was beat but I had to call and lost.

Oh, and I lost a $70 SNG to General Sal. I was literally out on the 1st hand during a failed "fold preflop" moment. I had J10 off and was in the cutoff and limped for 50 (1000 tourney chips, blinds 25/50) with 4 others. Flop KQ5 w/ 2 suited, checked to me, I bet 200. Then all hell breaks loose, the small blind moved all in for 1k and I am ready to fold. Then Mike (General Sal) moves all in from the BB, then another player call. Well shit, I am clearly beat but have 6 outs for the absolute nuts and 750 left to win 4k. I call and dont improve. Mike shows K5 and wins w/ 2 pair. The next hand he gets AA and takes out #4 and cruised to an easy victory for $350-370 or so.

Sunday I rocked, after that I just put things on cruise control. I had 3 hours before my conference and played 1/2NL at Mirage. I was a bit scared, because these guys looked tired, but 5 players had $1200-2500 in front of them in a game that they can only buy in for $200 max. So I play real tight for an hour before calling a raise w/ AQ. Flop AQx w/ 2 suited. Blind bets out small, like $15 toward the $50 pot. All fold to raiser who calls. I put the blind on a flush draw and raise to $75 to get him out. He folds and raiser calls. Turn blank I bet $50 and am called. River blank and raiser moved all in for just over my last $65, I call and he shows KK.....>WTF??????? TY I guess.....

I went on to take a bit more from these guys who really sucked, as luck would have it. The $2500 stack dropped down to $200 before leaving. Another odd note, one big stack made it $27 to go every time he came in. Now, do you really need to raise 13x the BB? Often w/ just J10?

That night I pick up another easy near triple at 1/2NL when my 45 suited in the big blind and a flop of 544 holds up. I took my $480 and moved to 10/20. I completely dominated this game. It was all locals, 2 old ladies, 3 dealers off the clock and 2 old farts. These guys didnt know what hit them. I would steam raise and take down 10 pots in a row. I was getting some monster hands and hitting big flops with them. I was raising w/ nothing and stealing or backing into hands. No one was able to put me on a hand, they were scared to play with me, but scared not to as well. From 10pm to 2pm, I picked up a quick $1300 before heading to bed. Around 1am, a sweet old lady said "Well, it looks like only one person is winning at this table".

Saturday and Monday were profitable, but not noteworthy. Tuesday I just played 8/16 (after an hour of 4/8) at the Bellagio. The table w/ full of idiots who didnt know what they were doing. I was up $500 in no time after hitting 2 Q10 hands in multi way raised pots w/ flops of AKJ and A1010. I ran to up $700 in the next few hours before calling it quits. I had a private Merrill Lynch party at Pure in Caesars, cant miss that!

This was by far my least fund trip to Vegas. I did well, but I was sick and miserable the whole time. I barely drank, I played until 2am the 1st 2 nights, then to bed at 10:30pm the last 2. I feel like I could have taken down an extra $1k if I had made late nights on Monday/Tues, but I just couldnt do it. I would get back to to room and cough until my eyes were watering and I would puke. No fun.

The NL games were so soft and the limit was easy money too. Everyone was so easy to read, it was embarrassing. A good example was Bellagio 8/16 w/ red AA. Flop Q high w/ 2 diamonds. Someone bets, I raise, all call, one all in. Turn diamond, I am concerned about a check raise (the Canterbury special, I am jaded) so as I grab $16 bet, I glance up to see if anyone looks poised to raise, but guys already have $16 calling chips in their hand, TY donks. River diamond and I get paid off and didnt miss a turn bet that I might have at home. At NL, people would grab raising chips well before it was their turn, if you had a monster, just put out the teaser bet or check and let them hang themselves (like 44 vs AA at Venetian flop 854 turn 4....yippee!).

I think that the key to my success this trip was that I avoided any big losses. I was willing to laydown winners at NL and laid down a lot of overpairs at limit. My only bonehead was (maybe it wasnt who knows) dumping $150 into a $600 pot at Venetian on a 4 high flush draw and gutshot staight draw vs 2 pair and a str8 on the turn. I should have let that go, but I was a victim of "I am rolling!" flush is coming! Plus, they reraised each other so small that I was just stuck in the middle.

Finally, saw Garth Brooks at the Mirage played a special tournament for (I think) VIPS. Then on Monday afternoon, Johnny Chan, Doyle Brunson, Barry Greenstein, Gus Hanson and were all playing against some bald guy that I didnt recognize. I had never seen Doyle of Gus before, so that was neat. Oh, I hadnt see Garth Brooks before either, but who cares, country music sucks.

Hey Dave,
Good to see everything's still rolling well for 'ya.

I was thinking about that first hand from the sit n' go... I still love it... busted 3 people in one hand! There were two diamonds... so you had 6 outs instead of the 8. Some other guy was on the nut flush draw if I remember right. You were still getting over 3:1 on your money though.

Sorry to hear you're not having fun due to illness. It always sucks to travel and feel ill. Cold hard cash is hardly a substitute for health.

I forgot to say one more time... thanks for the Canterbury Park beanie! I love that thing... I hate wearing the one that says Partypoker on it... this is one is pretty nice. Thanks again!!

The chips in the hand thing is such a great tell in limit.

Do you remember any hands where you folded overpairs in limit? I wouldn't mind hearing a couple of those. Nice job in Vegas, maybe I'll catch you next time. Feel better.

It was mostly just the usually tight old man who rarely raised that would 2-3 bet the turn out of no where. Each time there were others in the pot and some a potential straight on the board. KK QQ just isnt that strong in limit, if the right person raises, you can be sure that they have at least 2 pair.

I did have one with KK capped preflop, flop J10x and an old make leads, decent player raises, and I 3 bet. Turn 10, checked to me, I bet and old man calls, and decent player raises. I should have dumped here, but I was stubborn and called the raise and river bet. He had JJ, the old man (he was a weak player) rivered a Q after calling the whole way w/ AK. JJ boat took it down.
