I've always been impressed when I see a pro in a televised game call out their opponent's cards and really appreciate it when you get a peek into their reasoning process. And of course I try to work on this myself and have had some progress.
However I've been playing a lot of low buy-in MTT SnGs this month (because I've been getting clobbered at my usual FL ring game) and my reading ability has gone from weak to nonexistent. However my usual missed reads are overestimating the subject's hand when someone will make a big play with absolute crappola.
It seems to me that many players in these formats (typically $1.10 buy-in) are treating the games like a slot machine pull--maybe by trying to get lucky with a big stack early or moving on to the next tournament. If so, it follows that not only should I suspend my hand reading practice in these tournys but I might also throw out many other considerations I may have developed in playing poker.
Is there some different dynamic at work in these low buy-in tournaments?

I would say it is next to impossible to try to guess what these people have at low limits. Yes, you do get some decent players there, but the majority are nuts and are truly gambling.
With that being said, dont give too much credit to your opponents hands, but i wouldnt also loosen up either, just play your game and dont let them get you off of it because they are playing rags.
