bankroll advise would be appreciated

Posted Tue Feb 06, 2007 3:42 pm GMT by snow_devill
Good day everyone. I'm just generally looking for advise how how to improve my bankroll. I started with 100 but have sit n go'd my up to 250 or so. I have however seemd to plateau. Now I know I am still a mediocre player at best but I hope my plateauing is not the result of poor play. I do mostly the 2 table sit n goes for 1.50 and the 3$ single table ones both turbo. Now I'm finally starting to notice with the small turbo's that it is fairly easy to blind out ( remember mediocre not great at blind stealing or representing other hands) if it is one ofthose dead deck days. I'm also starting see a lot of loose players in these small entry tourny which is reading havoc on my decent ( at this point my strong suit) reading ability. Now I know from reading The Salche article on sit n goes what I should be doing and I am trying to apply all these principles but they don't seem to work for me . I think this is a result of playing low stakes with loose players and a current doldrum of brutal suck outs( it's been pretty bad the last couple of weeks) .
I also know my losses barely scratch the surface of many others during their down swings but it still sucks so see your bankroll shrink. So boiling down to it finally I guess what I'd like to ask for is since I've only done sit n goes to build my stash would it be advisable to switch to tables and what is the difference in mentality and playing? Or Should I jump up a level to try and find a tighter group of players who seem to act more logically? Or should I just label myself a donk and grind it out on what I am doing and not panic about losing some small potatoes at the level I'm at? Well that's my situation in a nutshell . Any advise good bad or ugly would be greatly appreciated

At $250 you're certainly bankrolled to move up to the $5.50 SNGs. If you're at Stars, these are not turbos, meaning you'll have more time to try to accumulate chips if stealing is not your strong point.

Also, never EVER let your stack even come close to blinding out. If you have 10BBs or less, then if it's folded to you, push all-in or fold. You need to either double up to have a real shot at getting into the money, or bust out and move on to the next one. At this point, you can't just wait for premium hands. If you wait too long, your stack won't be big enough to do damage to someone else if you win, and you'll still be short even if you do double.

The caliber of players will not be any better at that level, btw. Play tight in the early levels, and push hard with your strong hands. If you get short, don't try to fold into the money.

The $6.50 turbo tournaments on stars are pretty good for your bankroll.

Either the 18 person or the 45 person, I have been playing 10-20 of these per day and I'm holding a pretty steady winrate.

Yes, they are turbos, so they clearly are somewhat of a crapshoot.

They are good because they level of play is pretty bad, people will limp/fold with 6BBs in the mid stages of the tournament, so there's ultimate dead-money to pad your stack. Top 5 is usually a flip-fest, but if you get enough top 5s, you will start to accumulate wins.

Although you have to accept that there is a decent amount of variance at these levels. You might go 6-7 tournaments without a cash (esp. true for the 45 mans), but you also might make top 3 a bunch of times in a row.

You do NOT want to move to higher level to play better player.
Believe me, it is easier to play bad players.

Yep , stealing is extremely hard against them. But its a trick we all need to know to fair well in MTT's .

The main trick is play tight and small pots early on. No need to bust out on the first few levels with TPTK or with medium pocket pair (which happened to me twice today)
Playing tight doesn't mean playing only top 5 hands. It means trying to see cheap flop, folding to any real resistance with premium hand etc..

Good luck!
