i know salche plays nl50, if u read this, any help to build a roll so i can move up to nl100?
and if anyone else keeps a roll, what do you do?

Start at whatever limit you'd have 20 buy-ins for and move up from there.

I have always played with a very strict bankroll. My criteria for how much to have for each level and when to move up has changed a little over time, but overall, I have tried to practice good BR management (with a few failures... but haven't been bust in almost a year now).
As long as you're willing to move down if you start hurting, I'd say about 20-25x the buy-in should be ok for playing NL. For your base level, I'd want closer to 30x+ the max buy-in, hence about $1500 for $50NL. That might seem extreme, but it will really help with the swings. Once you get between $2000 and $2500, you could try moving up to $100NL so long as you're willing to drop back down if you dip below $2000 or so.
I built a nice roll over last summer playing mostly $50NL and $11 SnG's with a few tournament wins (at Stud 8-or-Better), so it is definitely doable.

I also have always had strick guidelines... I deposited 100$ and played nothing but 5$NL until 200$ then moved up to the 10$NL...
I write every session I play down in a book and include thoughts and questions to go along...
I worked my way up to 100$NL by whenever my BR goes up to 40xbuyin then I move up... if it goes to 10xbuy in I drop down.. SNGs 30xbuying and MTT 100xbuyin...
every sunday I tally up the week and I write kinda a blog to myself about how the week went and things I need to work on... whenever my BR goes over the max(highest it's ever been) I take 1/2 what it's over and give that amount to myself for doing a good job...
I've since turned a 100$ deposit into over 2k$ and have paid out to myself over 2k as well...
I've never gone bust...
I do so much cause when I started playing my g/f at the time was always on my case about getting addicted... so I made her a promise... I'll take the 100$ and if I ever go bust I'd quit poker forever... I made sure to keep good records so that there was no questioning my win/losses...

Yeah, its pretty tricky to stay within your BR.
As the micro level on my site is $10 NL, I actually never had the BR to play it. My biggest deposit was $110.
in any case, I finally manage to grind it up and now, when I'm up to $300 I already start to venture into the $25.
I know I'm not BR'd to play this level. But what I do is play mostly $10NL. Then after a winning session I'll sit in a $25NL with $10. I'm still playing within my BR (so I feel)
As for S&G I've played the $2 now until 200 and now play the $5.. Was planing to venture into the $10 if I cash in 5 in a row. But will stick in the $5 until my BR allow to move up.

I suppose there are two ways.
Conservative and Aggressive.
You can either deposit an amount and then play within your bankroll as others have suggested or you can deposit less than what is required (less than say 20x buyins at NL) and play a level you know you can beat and just hope variance doesn't take a diisliking to you.
Obviously you need to know for sure you can beat the level and hope ego isn't blocking your view and that you can afford it if you do go broke.
The second isn't really ideal, but I don't see it as a cardinal sin to do it. I have in the past.
Also, for making a bit of extra money, why don't you try bonus whoring? This is usually a good way to get a bankroll together. Check out bonuswhores.com, they have a whoring 101 guide on there which could be helpful.
Make sure for the sites they recommend you sign up with a rakeback deal though so after all the bonuses are cleared you can make a little extra money on the side.

Just to clarify - what you deposit is not necessary your effective BR.
Your real BR is a set amount that you are willing to set a side for poker and live without it!
Lets say you have $10k for poker. But deposit only $100 into on site. You can go ahead and play $50NL or even $100NL - sure, chances are this online BR will be bust. So what, you can always re-deposit.

how long does it take for someone to move up to another level? for me, I play nl50 and i am comfortable with that level... i have around 500 ish dollars for that stake... i know its underrolled, but i know i can play at the level... i will follow the 25 buy in rule and make 2500 around before moving up to nl100
i play a table of nl100 when days i am running hot... and weekends i play a local game of nl100...
anyways, i am not really building a roll... i move up and down alot and overall, i move up very slowly... (talking about my br)

moon - if you're not building up your roll then you're doing something wrong. either you're not winning enough on upswings, or you're losing too much on downswings.
i tend to move up and down, but my upswings are a lot better than my downswings, so my br will move from say 1000 to 1200 then to 950 then to 1300, etc, etc.
if you're playing break-even poker you should move to a site with rakeback so you get a little something for your time, or move down to 25NL and play more tables

Got a question about my bankroll. Its at about 120 and i play on full tilt. I play no limit only so what should my mtt tournies and sng as well as cash limits be?
Posted Fri Feb 09, 2007 5:32 pm GMT by Ensano
for MTTs you should have 100 times the buy in... this isn't written in stone but not a bad idea to follow seeing as how FTs are few and far between...
SNGs should be 20-30 buyins and cash at least 20x

playing in FT with a small BR is a hard life been doing it for a long time and had to re deposit 5 times)
You actually do not have the BR to play the lowest stakes cash games. But its ok, as long as you are willing to deposit again if you encounter a hugh down swing.
As for S&G's depends how you do really. if you kill in them you can go up to the $5.5. If you just do ok stay with the $2.25. I now kill the $5 6 hands S&G. Its pretty weak and the only reason I don't cash is if I make a hugh mistake or someone suckout on me.
Since I manage to build my BR to around $300 (on up and down swings now) I plan to give the $11 a go. But will drop down to the $5 if I don't do well.
IF you need the practice the $2 is almost the same level of the $5. I have to say I don't enjoy the full 9 players S&G as much. For some reason they are extremely tight. Often we get to level 7 with all player still in the game. Which means by the time its the last 3 it is usually a push game.
For some reason I had problems with $5 HU - so I practice this in the $2.
Even though I do great in end of S&G HU, I wasn't doing as good in an HU S&G.
Good luck.
BTW, think I sat with you a couple of times...
