I held a poker tournament last night with 7 guys, and around 4 in the morning there were just two of us left, and one was me.
Of course, I decided to keep playing because the other guy was the chip leader, by a huge margin.
And of course, I knew, absolutely knew I could take this guy. And for the first hour or so, I was consistently draining his stack.
Then.... I flopped kings and sixes. Lucky for me, there was also a club flush draw. However, I was deep into the pot by the turn when a club came up. I knew he could have the flush; his betting patterns implied the flush.... and yet... when he went all in... I called. WHY??? That is the unanswerable question. I just didn't think he had it... my own pride perhaps... some vision of my hand as unbeatable.
I lost it... he had the flush. And instead of walking away with all the money in the tournament... I walked away with NOTHING.
SO... I want everyone who reads this to go out tonight and get in a poker game and FORCE yourself to not make ONE single stupid marginal-hand call. The whole night. Not one mistake. Do it in memory of my defeated Kings and Sixes.
peace
