Card Dead in a Tournament

Posted Wed Feb 14, 2007 12:32 pm GMT by lwestatbus
This post is really a continuation of my earlier post on MTT Patterns but is a new question so I started a new post. I've been trying to adapt to Webby's advice on middle-tournament play and am running into a problem with some regularity. That is being so card dead it is beyond belief.

I've now had a few tournaments where my early play (which coincides with Webby's advice) doubles or tripples me up. But then I've run into an hour-long streak with no playable cards whatsoever. And I don't mean few playable hands--I mean none. Unending strings of 9-2, 8-2, J-5, A-x, on and on and on. Maybe one or two marginally playable hands but OOP, etc.

How do you play when you are card dead in early or middle stages of a tournament?

Continue to stay patient and pray u get good cards when the blinds are getting up there.

If you are still card dead when the blinds are up there, you will just have to try to steal alot PF to stay healthy.

there are a couple good ways to preserve a stack, although they obviously involve some risk

1- if a pot gets folded to you in late position and the blinds are on the tighter side, go ahead and put in a 2.5xBB raise and see what happens

2- it is crucial to pay close attention to the players who LIMP in MP or EP and them FOLD to a raise. Limp-folders are the best way to pick up a big pot full of dead money, not only will the limper discourage other callers, but if you sence weakness, put in a bit bigger bet of 4-5xBB you can probably pick up the pot

3- if you are in the big blind and you see a community limp - say 4-5 limpers, just make a huge raise. The EP limpers probably have better hands than the LP limpers, and the pressure from people acting after them will prpobably cause the pot to fold around. For this move you might need somewhat good of a hand, and a hand that probably wont be dominated, so perhaps suited connectors, gap connectors, Qx suited, even something like 9-6o would be plenty good enough for me to try this move

4- the squeeze play: if there is an overly active maniac at the table who likes to raise a lot of pots preflop w/o a solid hand, wait for him to make a standard raise and also have a calling station cold-call behind him, this is another good time to put in a very large raise (probably at least half your stack depending on stack sizes, ect). This situation doesn't come up very often, but if you pay very close attention to your opponents you might be able to find some dead chips this way.

Remember you don't have to steal very often in order to keep a healthy stack, especailly if you can find a pot with limp/folders. Eventually you will catch some form of hand, just remember not to overplay it b/c you can lose a lot of your stack Cbetting with AQ on a missed flop.
