Live MT tournament NL blinds $500/$1000
I have been playing a tight game and have shown down strong hands. Two other runners had about the same amount of chips $8000 odd, both were loose, one more passive than the other.
Middle position the more passive calls, Hero is on the button with 89s and raises it $2000, BB calls, middle position folds, the flop comes 278 rainbow, BB checks
Hero is all-in, BB thinks then calls, BB show 7Ao, the turn is A, river 4, BB wins with two pair AA77. My questions are:
Should I have been in this pot?
Should I have raised the pot pre flop?
If yes by how much
When I hit the top pair should I have gone all-in?
So I don’t have to explain later I was thinking that my initial raise would frighten of the middle position player because he would call and fold to any strength, the blinds had just gone up to $1000 so the amount of the bet seemed substantial, BB also appeared week, I was thinking that I needed to protect my hand and convinced myself that the BB would fold, I put the BB on two over cards and was happy to see him turn a lower pair with the A kicker.

Because you decided to raise preflop, you played the hand as well as you could have: you got your opponent to put all his chips into the pot as a 30% favorite.
Some issues: Your stack = 8000 chips, blinds are 500/1000, you have less than 5M so you need to be looking for opportunities to go all-in preflop. At this stage of the tournament there is not much point in making smaller raises since any raise you make commits too much of your stack to the pot. So the real question, is 8-9o a good enough hand to push with preflop? That depends on how many people are left in this MTT, how many people get paid, ect ect ect. You almost have to expect a call so you need a hand with some showdown potential. 8-9 would probably be good enough for me.
