Open Pushing

Recently I was top 30 in chips in a free roll with like 80 left.
It was getting late late and I had to work early so I was not feeling like I
really wanted to make it all the way to the end unless luck dictated it.

I get dealt JJ UTG and pushed.
called by A10, rivers an A and I'm cripled, next hand I'm out.
If I win that JJ hand, I'm top 5 in chips and probly have a good chance to get to the money or even win.

The question is, is this ever a good move when you have a decent chip stack?
My thoughts were, rather than open pushing, make a big raise pre-flop, see whose left for the flop. If its heads-up maybe push the flop no matter what, maybe push only if no overs come on the flop, maybe don't push at all, bet pot if no overs. In this case had I done that I doubt A10 calls flop with nothing but A high.

thoughts on open pushing when we have chips to play with with 99,1010, JJ?
seems donkish but is there a time and place besides shortstack to open push with these hands.

The only reqson to open push when your stqck in big enough is if you want callers. Confusing isnt it? Low level and freeroll players will see open pushing as a sign of not wantging to get called. (actually, most players might) when I see an open push I usuall suspect low pairs.

as for open pushing with J's - well the only hands you dont want calling are : Qs - As. You dont even mind racing against AK or AQ and you are pretty much ahead against all other hands.
So open pushing is good if you think you get called. Other wise; its a waste of an ok hand.
