Had to defend myself

Hi!

The hand took place yesterday in the local cardroom...

NL200 Game, people are playing loose, some play every hand

I limp on the button with J9s along with 5 others

Flop came QT5 rainbow... all check...

Turn comes a beautiful 8... no flushdraws possible

checked to me... i bet 10 and get 2 caller

River brings a 5... they check... I bet out 20... one guy minraises me to 40

i call and take down the pot...

The two guys started to talk to me, how bad I played the river... I would have to put hi all-in and how could i just call that bet... i have to valuebet it...
After I told them, that there could be a full house out there, they started laughing and the table started to agree to the two guys...

I dont think it was that bad... what do you say?

I think it is safe to make a healthy reraise here.

Why do you listen to a word anyone else at the table says? Honestly?

99% of poker players are morons. They don't know what they're doing, or why, and whenever they act like they're REALLY sure about something it's more than likely because they have "heard" it somewhere before - sans any of the addendums and nuance that was obviously added to the original arguments.

To answer your questions, though, there doesn't really seem to be much threat of a FH in this situation. A mediocre reraise on the river would probably be good to throw in here a solid 60-70% of the time.

It would be hard to put anyone on pocket queens or tens because nobody raised pre-flop. Pocket 5s would be very unlikely since there were two on the board already. Pocket 8s probably would have folded to your bet on the flop. So you would really have to put someone on slowplaying Q5 or T5 in order to have you beat.

I think calling is ok, but there's probably more value in raising.

thanks

The problem in this cardroom is that the play play so dangerously bad that its almost impossible to put somebody on a hand (at least for me).

People raise when they should call, call when they should fold etc... but you get paid off 90% of the time when you have the nuts...

The guy sitting next to me, shared his hands with me when i folded and this guy called a 5 EUR bet with a 83os... seriously!

Thats why i just called, but at least i have some more opinions now... probably i was scared a bit, because i had some sessions, where my nuts on the flop got destroyed on the river...

Normally i do not talk very much about my hands when i am playing, but i was called an idiot for that play and to that i tend to react a bit different Wink

Actually i never try to tell them when they played poor, but I congratulate when they hit their gutshots, after calling a potsized bet...

What you say is very true supa, usually there are not more than 2 players on the table that have an idea of what they are doing...

you also have to remember that what you're doing is supposed to counteract what everyone else at the table is trying to accomplish - if you were being any good at it, do you really think your opps would be so easily able to figure you out? Razz

It takes a lot of balls to check the river with a boat here, you could have been betting with air on the turn. It probably takes even more from a bad player to just mini raise after getting you in their trap. I am raising here more often than not in this spot.

BTW, don't worry what the table says to you, honestly when I'm at a bad table and pretty much everyone agrees I've done something stupid it usually makes me feel better that I did it. Its the time that everyone on the table agrees with me that I feel nervous. When the dealer laughs at you it's 50/50.

after reading the original post its obvious that table was full of idiots.

i dont think im re-raising a river check-raise with the straight here either.

i would of raise on a table like that....
if they had the boat, then u lose, but u know they will pay u off most of the time.. so a raise would of been better.

You should laugh, say you made a mistake and feared the flush or something. The fact that there was no flush draw possible will hopefully have them brand you a fish and you can start setting them up for a big fall later on. Sometimes it does not hurt to appear dumb at the table Laughing

In my opinion you have to trust your read, but you could easily go broke in an unraised pot like that. Pocket pairs can sneak up on you when you think you have made the nuts. I think you could of raised on the river and got some money out of them, but in the safer situation you can just call it's all about how you feel about the hand.
