Dealt a Pair, seen the Flop - What next ?

Posted Thu Mar 01, 2007 10:30 am GMT by Concussed
Generally speaking, i throw away low pairs from early position, and try to see mid-pairs as cheaply as possible up to 10-10, and raise JJ upwards from late position.
If playing mid-pair, and i miss the flop to at least 2 higher cards, i generally fold to a decent bet. Yet i see others raising and seeing the River almost at any cost.

Any ideas on whats the best policy - post Flop ?

i would advise not to through away all those low pairs. pocket pairs are immense money makers when flopping a set. early position or not.

Are Pairs highly rated then ?
Anyone know roughly the % winning with pairs ?

Some pairs are highly rated. Low pairs can get a little tricky at times, but the potential to make a ton of money with a low set is def. there.

If you have 33 and flop comes A83 and your opponent has AK, you are going to take down a nice pot.

Low pairs, if you can get a cheap flop, it's definitely worth it: you're a touch over 10% to flop a set, and when you do it's most often a nice pot.

If you miss a flop with over cards, you almost always have to let them go. Too many players just won't let them go, and you're not going to get the odds with your 2 outs.

Heads up play, very different. If opponent pushed all in preflop, and you were confident you were going to go heads up against an AK, would you call with QQ? If you answer yes (and in most cases you should), then what's on the face of the pp doesn't matter. I only mention it as I've talked to people who say in that situation that they would immediately call with QQ, but not with 22? There's absolutely no difference heads up: the low pairs are just as strong as the TT JJ QQ. If you're going to be calling in against multiple villains though, you're far better off just throwing them away.

Good for a cheap flop, but be wary of this:

I would say the price to see a flop with a pp doesn't matter too much, If you can get 8:1 on your original call if you flop a set, then I say call dem raises with low pp's

e.g.

You're playing $1/$2 NL, villian makes it $10, you have 33, his remaining stack is $90, you have him covered.... you make the call because you can stack him and get 8:1 plus on your call.

If this situation arises an infinite amount of times you will be ahead.

I think you're considering hands in the wrong fashion. You shouldn't think of one pair of hole cards "beating" another, because all hand values are relative after the flop. While even the lowly pair of deuces is about 50% against AK, I never like to put in all my money on a 50-50. I'd prefer to wait until after the flop when the picture becomes clearer.

In general, if stacks are deep enough in No Limit and you can usually get in cheap, it's great to play pocket pairs in the hopes of flopping a set and then playing a big pot. Big pots are not for one pair.

Sometimes pairs (mid-pairs and small pairs) are still good on the flop even if you don't hit a set (big pairs are frequently the best hand if no overcard comes), but this is often a matter of feel, and until you get some experience, folding when you encounter overcards on the flop and you are out of position is the safe play when you don't get a set.
