I've been playing online poker for a couple of years now, and i think i want to try playing at a casino for low stakes. I know this is a very newbie question but what are the major differences between the two. I want to have some idea of what I'm getting myself into.
I know that i have to tip the dealer if i win a pot. But how much?
Is their anything else i should know about?
Also is online poker very different from a live game?
Your help is much appreciated.
Thanks in advance finalhonor

People are usually a little bit looser preflop in live games, you'll likely see 4+ people in a raised pot. Live games are usually pretty fishy.

First, you don't have to tip the dealer. Just like going to the restaurant, tip according to the service.
Depends what you mean by very different. It's much slower, that's certain. I don't know I necessarily agree with exit's diagnosis of the looseness. I'd say the lower stakes play about the same anywhere; the difference is "low stakes" live is $2/$4, online it's $0.50/$1.
Just go with an amount you feel comfortable with losing the first time. Get used to the feel, if you don't lose it all or even win, great. If you lose, think of it as tuition.

Tipping 1 buck for pots that see the flop / are won by a continuation bet and maybe 2-4 bucks for laaaaaarge pots. If you tip SOMETHING nobody will notice. Tipping nothing gets eyes staring at you and that's just unwanted attention.

I'll usually tip nothing for a chop, walk or extremely small pot, one dollar for a decent sized pot, a couple of bucks for a large pot and three bucks for a huge pot. I play mostly 2/4-4/8 limit in live casino games.

I always tip... even if all I do is steal the blinds... I believe in karma and if I don't tip I know I won't get any hands for a while...

Right, I'm not suggesting pulling a Mr. Pink. What I'm saying is, if you happen to run into a dealer that isn't competent, is an ass, you're not obligated to reward them for that behavior.
Unlikely in my experience. Follow the above guidelines around tipping.
Mostly, just relax and have fun.

so if u win the blinds say a $12 pot u tip $1? damn ur profit margin would b hurt by this. do dealers only get tips as payment or do the casinos pay them too???

They usually make minimum wage.
If you just steal the blinds at a 8/16 game($12), I still tip $1. On these hands, it is acceptable to say "let me get you next time" and tip $2 at a larger pot, $1 at another smaller pot.
Yes, it definately cuts into your earnings. If you get 1-2 drinks an hour and tip $1/pot, you typically give away $5/hour.

A little late but : The biggest different between live and online is stack size and pot size. For some odd reason, playing live, there are no small numbers next to the pot telling you how many chips are in it.
So you have to count as you play.
Good tip I got here is to count how many player are in the pot X the bet .. practice when you are out of the pot as well.

wether you win or lose at poker the casino is still making their money. So if your down why would that stop you from tipping the dealer who is doing a good job at keeping the game inline. Remember most dealers make min wage if that some tip paying jobs which dealers are considered, like waitresses min wage is far below the normal min wage. They work for the tips.

Come play in Queensland Australia no tipping allowed in Casinos, the dealers are paid a fair wage and accepting tip is against the rules it may even be against our gaming laws.

Since poker in casino's in Europe is pretty new (at least in Holland) I don't think the dealers relay on tips as much as in the US.
Do you tip dealers in BJ?

Last time I played I went all in twice and tipped a 5er when I doubled up each time, but yeah I usually just tip a buck or two.

Oh I forgot to mention - a big factor in whether or not i tip depends on whether the tips are pooled / divided amongst:
1. All of the poker dealers
2. Just my dealer
3. All of the poker dealers, poker runners, managers
4. All of the dealers in all of the casino.
In alot of Canada the choices are just 3 and 4, which kind of sucks.

I know you're probably aware of this, but generally speaking, in most casino poker rooms in the US, the dealers keep their own. The other casino games usually pool and divide all their tokes.
However, in some US poker rooms, it is mandatory to for the poker dealers to tip the brush (runners, board operators) a specified amount each shift (usually $5-$10). And in a lot of places, its mostly an unwritten rule that you tip the floorperson/dealer coordinator (about $10 or so).
Also, for dealers and players alike, don't forget to tip the cage (cashier). $1 per transaction is usually sufficient.
Just some tipping info for live casino poker newbies.

Split tip pools are so damn annoying. Like at a restaurant I get served by a nice and pretty girl and if I tip her some extra, then he co-worker 'pimpleboy' is going to share the profits?
That's just so wrong.

Nm, didn't really make sense.

I tipped this chick at the Venetian $3 for a $4 pot. I then insisted that Sean tip her $6 on his next pot and called him out as a cheap bastard when he tried to get by with just $3.
He gave her the extra $3 after my ridicule.
