thinking about dealer school

Posted Mon Mar 12, 2007 4:08 pm GMT by warren
I've ben reading a few THP books and playing moderate amounts of both live and online games.

For some reason I have the urge to go to dealer school. Any advice?
I can't help but think hours of table play that doesn't harm my bankroll could be a real opportunity to take my game to the next level.

There are a couple dealers here I remember seeing. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Where do you live and want to deal? If you're in the Las Vegas area by chance, go to Community College of Southern Nevada, I went to the Cheyenne campus. It's much cheaper ($150 for the poker class), vs the other big "schools" ($500+), and the community college class will do you just fine if you apply yourself, practice until you're efficient, almost flawless in technique, and discreet about pulling in the house drop. Practice and you'll do fine, especially considering you already play the game, know most procedures, know the hand rankings, etc etc

But why do you really want to deal? To fund your bankroll? For practice? Nothing better to do? People harass dealers, abuse dealers, throw cards, curse us, try to jip the pot or their blinds, f*ck, rumor has it the late Puggy Pearson once pissed on a dealers leg under the table.. 100% Stereotyping and generally speaking, most dealers I've met are true hardcore degenerates, and I'm not really any exception.

And poker jobs come around and then disappear quickly, I was just unemployed for over 5 months, before just recently getting hired for a major strip casino.

I live in Canada.
As far as the degenerates go....that's my kinda people... Laughing

I just want it for the overall game experience and more mastery of the game....if there is such a thing.

tell me more.

p.s. the first guy that pisses on my leg will get his skull caved in. Very Happy

I saw this thread just as I learned that I wouldn't have any summer teaching available at my university (budget problems). I thought, hey, the dealers at the local dog track make pretty good tips, maybe I'll give that a try. Had a chance to play tonight and asked one of them what they had to do to get the job.

Whoooaaaa: Answer was three months of three days a week eight hours a day of training to get the job. I've only got three months of break so I guess that's out.

I guess I'll have to try to find a real job.

Just curious -- how much do poker dealers on the strip usually make per hour? dealers outside of vegas?

I've heard the dealers at Foxwoods don't make much. I also know for a fact that dealers at foxwoods split their tokes, but I'm not sure if it's dead even or based on how long you've worked there.

Caesars Palace Las Vegas- $200-$300 Tips per 8 hour shift (on swing shift), + $6.15/hour pay
Binions (downtown Las Vegas)- $100-$175 per hour shift on swing, + $5.50/hour pay
Speedway Casino (A "locals" casino in ghetto North Las Vegas)- $50-$150 per 8 hour shift; when they actually have a game running, + $5.65/hour pay

I speak of the above casinos from personal experience. Every casino I've ever dealt at, poker dealers keep their own tokes.

200-300 per 8 hour shift isnt bad at all for being a dealer...i guess the key is find the big casinos.

Also, is working time pretty steady...can you count on 40 hour shifts per week or is it all over the place?
