Playing strat with wild cards?

Posted Mon Mar 12, 2007 9:33 pm GMT by fox_91
I play with a group of people every week, where we play dealers choice... mostly Holdem and Omaha but at times people call a wild card. I do fine when we play straight, but I can't nail a good strat with wilds. It makes so many options, and it seems like even with a strong pocket pair you are down to someone holding a wild.

Are there any guidelines on how to change your play when wilds are in play?

depends on how many wilds... I've tried playing holdem with 2 wild cards and you basically win if you have a wild.... it's really kinda silly to play holdem or omaha with wilds...

Interesting question, as most of the games I played with Wild Cards I played before I got really serious about Poker. But overall, I would recommend playing much tighter than usual and only drawing to NUT hands, both in Hold'em and ESPECIALLY Omaha (I probably would not play any hand without a wild card in Omaha and would only invest money into a pot with a set or a big two-way nut draw).

Let me first disclaim that I don't know the maths on wilds, and this is just based on experience/opinion and may be wrong.

I'd usually play tight in a wildcard game adjusted by the amount of cards dealt to start with. The more cards dealt the tighter you're going to have to be. Say in a 5 person 5-card draw game with two wilds, entering the pot without a wild card is probably a mistake unless you got a clinch of a hand.

For flop games....Let's say you are playing 9-handed omaha with one wild card. 9x4 cards are dealt preflop which means a 32/48 of the wildcard being dealt to someone if you don't hold it. So if you don't hold a wild, your hand should be really superstrong without it to justify entering the pot and you should really hit the flop quite hard to continue. Having a wild in your hand will make you able to hit _alot_ in in omaha, and holding the wild probably makes any hand playable. More wilds naturally means even tighter play.

But if you are playing say 3 handed hold'em, then only 4/50 chance of someone holding the wild if you don't have it, and if you play supertight now you'll get run over in the game, and you'll just have to hold the wild as 'possible' holding for later streets.

Personally I don't think flop games and wild cards is a 'good mix', I think wilds suit stud and draw games better, but that's more taste than anything I guess.

On the bright side, it's actually fairly easy to pick up if inexperienced players are holding a wild card as they tend to use abit longer thinking about their hand.

Also remember how wilds will affect the current nuts. Say on a 'nut' flush, your kicker may now play etc. Should be especially important in omaha I guess.

Most important thing to remember is probably that wildcards are obscenely powerful. I have only very rarely played Hold'em with any wilds, and certainly have done pretty much zero thinking about them/mathing/etc, but it should be pretty obvious that ANY starting hand with a wild is WAYWAYWAY better than the best non-wild hands. Probably holds true for Omaha as well
