What Happened to Downtown Vegas

This is wayy late, but I haven't been here in a while. I just thought of this though, as I booked my trip to Vegas for this coming July.
2 Summers ago, the boys and I all headed out that way, and shared a suite downtown at the Plaza. It was cheap, and I knew there would be a handful of poker rooms within walking distance. Well, we had a great time, there was 4 tournies a day at the Plaza, plus action at the Nugget, and Binions. Downtown was packed with fellow Hold Em players.
So this last summer, we decide to do the same trip. What a let down! Downtown was dead. The Plaza couldn't get more than a table or two in a tourney, and there was only one cash game going, usually a 2-4 limit (yuck). The place was filthy, and the staff at the Plaza were beyond rude! I flippeda $20 to the lady at the front desk hoping to get our room ready early, and all that bought me was a check-in that was 3 hours late! Binion's still had a good poker crowd, and the Nugget just had opened their new room, but the Plaza was a ghost town. In fact, at like 4am after I busted out of a late night Tourney at the Nugget, I saw a group of guys walk up to a craps table at the Plaza with rolls of 100 bills looking for some action. I was totally blown away when the pit boss told them that the craps table was closing for the night and that "they's have to bet their dollar bills elsewhere"! Wow, a casino turning down some drunk high rollers! I've never heard of that in my life!
So, my question is, what happened to downtown? In less than a year, it went from a hot spot, to a ghost town.
Needless to say, this year we are booked up on the Strip......

We were there during the Series last August and had a blast. We stayed at the Nugget which, while not packed, was still pretty steady. The tournaments ran two or three tables and there was a constant 2/4 FL and 1/2 NL running with a 3/6 FL game running about two-thirds of the time we were in there. Small and quiet, but beautiful and fun also. Staff was great. Binion's was empty. There were may three out of thirty tables running a game. We stayed away from the rest of downtown and played on the strip the rest of the trip. Bellagio, Rio and Caesar's were packed. Even Luxor was jamming, we just went in to look around and ended up playing there for almost 7 hours!
