Patience and concentration

Posted Fri Mar 16, 2007 4:39 am GMT by Eusebio
Hi!

I would like to know if you have any special ways or tricks to keep yourself concentrated and how you manage to keep your patience.

I find myself often distracted from the action, but not from any disturbance or something from outside, but my thoughts keep flying from one end of the world to the other... seems like all kind of things come to my mind, especially when my cards are dead for some time...

I tried to use an ipod, but somehow it doesnt really work...

If i think of my sessions i recognize that i am really paying attention for the first hour or two but after the 10th time somebody folded on the river and i dont see the cards I tend to think: what the heck, i trying to pick up some patterns or tells with the result that i dont get to see the cards... i wont make more afford on that... or watching people, while the board is being dealt... after some time i am just not doing it, because i get lazy...

So do you have a special way to stay at the same level for some hours?

thanks

You gave the answer. If all you can take is 2 hours, don't play longer.

I very rarely play long 1 table sessions.
When you play 2-4 games at the same time, your attention do not have time to go any where else but the game.
Sure, you don't have enough time to see betting pattern, but you can get a general feel about players. And if you didn't notice a player that just made a huge move, either he just move to your table or he is tight and its better to go out of his way.

Online this is not a problem... I often quit, qhen i think i am too distracted etc.

But in the cardroom its quite difficult... you get to see about 30 hands/hour... i am excited when i am in a hand, but i get very bored after some time, when i am not... once i sat there 4 hours without a hand... I was bored, a bit tilting and started to play marginal hands and my 3.5xBuy-In stack disappeared...
I know, I know... get up, when u r not comfortable, but thats a pretty hard thing... and I can deal with that issue, but the question is: how to keep me comfortable...

I am open to everything, so if you have tipps like Zen or something like that i will sure give it a chance...

I have come to the conclusion (for me at least) that paying attention to every little thing is a waste of brain power and wears me down too much to worry about it. Since I play NL exclusively, the result of any given session is really only going to be about a few big hands where I have to make big decisions. So, I would rather pay some casual attention to the overall game while really concentrating on finding which player that I want to target for the big pots. That leaves me with the brain energy necessary to capitalize on the targets mistakes.

Am I sacrificing somve overall EV by doing it this way? Probably. But, I will gladly give up a small amount of EV versus the good players at the table to make sure that I am sharp enough to capitalize on the big EV decisions against the fish.

Not sure if this really answers your question, but I guess the bottom line is that you shouldn't worry too much about this assuming that you are still paying attention to the really important things.

I try to play the game within the game. When I'm out of a hand I try to put people on hands. I pay attention to which guys call down to the river and then muck when the third suit doesn't come, regardless of how much is in the pot. I try to see if I can pick up on any tells or strange activity.
