Sit N go Quest...

Posted Fri Mar 23, 2007 12:31 pm GMT by kompis
After mmming and ahhing about what i would do day to day in between mtt results i came up with a challenge... not necessarily to make alot of money but a challenge to teach me discipline and to put in the hours at the game i am trying to make a living out of.

I am to play 30 sngs a day 6 days a week... (the 7th day can be used to make up for any that i havent got round to doing yet) i will keep a record of all my finishes in these 9 handed sngs - turbos on stars. I will be playing $55 +5 ones with $2400 in my account. Should i lose down to $1200 i will drop down limits to keep my quest going. This is not about trying to rake in as much profit as i can - while that will be nice to see if i am a +ev player in these sngs i am more concerned with accomplishing something i set out to do.

For now i will set it out for 30 days only and will re asses from there... Which would mean 900 sngs by the end of it. I will see how i get on in the firs few days and may change the amounts around a bit depending on how it goes...

I will post my standing ROI %, and Profit/loss balance. along with how many 1st 2nds 3rds 4ths 5ths etc. I make on that day, and cumulatively as the days add up.

Ive done 10 so far today: AV ROI = 7.1% $+43

Sounds like fun!

Good luck dude, I'm pretty excited to watch this go down. Winning streaks feel really good, losing streaks blow monkey ass.

How many tables do you run at once?

Nice challenge.

I also play as much S&G as I can now. I like it much better then S&G and so far I do so much better as well. My over all %ROI is %24 (my $5 %ROI is %40 , had a big loosing streak when started a couple of month ago in the $2) am now playing mainly $10

I play 6,9 and 18 players. I play up to 3 at the same time and find I manage to win about 3 out of 5 (I think sharkscope stopped showing %ITM)

Anyway, I think S&G are a beast in them selves. They are defiantly not like cash games but they are also not like MTT. Maybe because they are short and you can always play another one if you go bust, people do seem to gamble more then in MTT (Grant, haven't played the high levels)

Once we settled I want to play 15-20 S&G a days. I see the top of low levels FT S&G earner play more then a 1000 S&G a month with %ROI of 1% they usually make a couple of grands a month (not bad)

Good luck and keep us posted.

Day 2 went alot better, managed to play 26 during the day before i went out for a few beers. When i came back i played the nightly on stars and did the remaining 4 sngs along side it. They seem to be alot looser/ worse players in these sngs at night - not conforming to proper turbo strategy of ... FOLD FOLD FOLD FOLD FOLD then PUSH PUSH PUSH PUSH. I may have to adjust my sleeping pattern to be in line with these american time playing donks.

Today does not count as part of one of the days of the SNG challengs, as i said One day off a week... Today is that day off, so day 3 will be on monday.
Will be playing the big sunday mtts today so no turbo madness im afriad.

exit - i run 4 tables at once

Posted Sun Mar 25, 2007 10:38 am GMT by MrDarling
Am really not sure about the levels of games in these limits, and am also sure the the fact that it is turbo make the HU much less poker and much more lotto but it seems to me you are even between 1st and 2nd. Is there a problem with your HU games?

Usually against most player, we (THP'rs) should kick ass in HU Smile

Well, its always nice to be in profit, and 18% ROI is great stuff.

Posted Sun Mar 25, 2007 1:19 pm GMT by kompis
normally by the time we make it heads up i have luckboxed my way there and reach the last 2 with about 3 - 4 bbs. all in every hand is standard by this point

interseting idea/thread Kompis
I wonder what the difference in cash/time played would be in non-turbos.
It seems to me turbos are more of a pushfest due to the rapidly increasing blinds.
Less skill vs more luck.

One thing Im wondering about with this is the time invested. $/hour
You were $657 for the first 3 days right?
or was that 2 days.
How many hours a day are you playing?

Posted Sun Mar 25, 2007 3:33 pm GMT by kompis
I have completed 2 days of the challenge so far,
each sng typicaly lasts about 40 mins give or take 10 mins.

30 sngs playing 4 tables at once = 7.5 sets of 4 @ 40 mins a pop = 300 minutes.
300 minutes = 5 hours.

So 5 hours daily give or take an hour depending on the nature of the games on the day.

Turbos are more of a push fest but i dont think in the long term this will affect whether its skill or not, if u play alot the variance will even out. But in the short term turbos definately have more variance.

Imo sng's arent really "skill" games (in the traditional poker sense of the word)anyway, its all about math and there is very little actual real poker involved in them. They have developed their own type of skill set requirements which is v different to normal poker.

I don't think I agree with this regarding normal S&G.
I play 6, 9 and 18 players S&G and more often then not I bust out when I get unlucky. Sure I get the occasion donk moments, or sometimes I'm card dead or badly miss play my hands.
I think there is a lot of skill involved in the low levels S&G. It feels like I cash in 3 out of 5 and when I cash its probably 2 out of 3 first place. In normal S&G if I make it to last 2 I win it most of the time. Simply because most low level players are even worse then me.

Damn sharkscope stopped showing %ITM but my %ROI speaks for it self. (40% in $5 and %25 in $10 and improving)

Define "unlucky." Losing as a 60-40 favorite? In my mind, most of the "skill set" required to be a winning SnG player is knowing when it's correct to push and calling pushes with the appropriate range of hands. In the later stages, if you can get your money as a 60-40 favorite, that's pretty good, and even then, variance is still going to be pretty high. It's definitely more of a long term grind than cash game Poker, or even deep-stacked MTT's.

Posted Sun Mar 25, 2007 7:06 pm GMT by kompis
yeah dc has grasped what i was trying to say. Im not saying theres no skill darling. Just that alot of old timers and people in genereal wouldnt consider it "real poker".

I mean its generally agreed that optimum strategy for sng's is to play like a rock till the blinds get big, then by using an equation called ICM push all in very often. while picking the right time and knowing when your A x is ahead and its right to call all your chips with it is a type of skill... its not what people would typically consider poker skill - like bluffs, sick laydowns, great reads, setting people up - maintaining table image etc. You get the idea...

If you played 5 tables it would only take 6 sets to get 30 games in, you would save about an hour per day...

seems +EV to me

Just finished off my last 4 turbos for today. 30 sngs today and it couldnt have ended soon enough. Its been horrible today i have came 4th a sick amount of times and when ive cashed ive lost so many all ins its frightening. Been experiencing v bad luck today really was tough going all the way to 30 and taking so much beats, i'd get it in with QQ vs QJ and expect to lose. And id push all in into AA KK with trash , or id push with 78 and expect at least to be live if i got called but instead id be up against K7. so sick.

Its only 5.30 so i got plenty of the day left, i may go out tonight watch a film or something. Or i could do some mtts later.

Hopefully 2moro will be less sick. 2moro i am not gona play them during the day.. the players are too tight for my liking, the games are much faster after about 10pm gmt.

Day 4 of the quest has gone pretty abysmaly. I have more 3rd places than iv'e ever had. I am simply losing most of the all ins that get called. if im ahead behind or racing, 60 40, 70 30 etc. u get the picture.

Pretty impossible when the cards are against u.
Still good sign is that i have had 2 ugly days and i have kept fighting the good fight. I think if 2moro is as bad as this and i make it through witout going insane then completing the quest will be a formality. Kompis is learning the discipline OO RAh.

Tuesday March 28th DAY 4

2nd:3(18)
3rd:9(15)
4th:6(20)

I feel you.

The last 3 session I didn't even cash in one S&G.
I typically play around 6-7 a day (still playing out of internet cafe) running 3-4 at the same time.
Since FT release the new version with the option to resize tables, I do worse. It seems like I actually see less of the play if I see all the tables at the same time.

Luckily, I still kill the HU S&G so I manage to recoup some of my loses through that. But it sure sucks not to win let alone cash in any game.

The other day were some weird one. Second hand I get K's in MP. UTG min raise to 60. I reraise to 180 and get 4 callers (him included)
flop is 22J (2 spades) he bet the pot (640) I push. everyone fold and he calls with Ts7s . WTF are you thinking - of course he hit his flush.

Day 5 of the sng quest.

Sped through them today now i am 5 tabling...

Played a full tilt mtt at teh same time as 4 tabling them and lost 2 all ins when into the last 100 people to bust out of that. When you playing turbos and you lose 2 all ins where you could easily win and then make top 3 it makes "beats" or losing races all the time very easy to take. Its like breathing in these turbos.

Went alot better in todays 30, i was a bit more methodical and tweaked a few things in my strategy. Also i ran alot better when we were 3 handed.

Wednesday March 28th, day 5

1st:8(20 in total)
2nd:3(21)
3rd:0(15)
4th:6(26)
5th or worse:13(68)

Day 6 today, another losing day im afraid.

Lost many many all ins where i was in v strong shape. Lose nearly all the races, and lost nearly all the times i was behind.

I guess im hoping after a few more sessions that my winning sessions are worth more in $'s than my losing sessions cost me. Cos it seems I will be recording many sessions in the red... So when im running well i should be able to cover the losing sessions..

Thursday March 29th, day 6

1st:2(22 in total)

something has come up this week that is going to affect my quest. My sister is moving house - and i have "volunteered" to assist.

Wont really be able to do sngs to this volume over the next few days as i will be helping with the new house etc.

so i guess the quest is paused

house moving is over now. and i had a nice run in the sunday million last night, finishing an agonising 14th place after about 9 hours play. Would have been awesome to final in that mtt. Anyway after about 5days off from teh challenge i sad to say im not gonna continue it. It was harming my mtt game and thats where my money all comes from. Shame realy as if u read back the first post in the challenge i was saying i just want to finish sumthing i start etc etc. but oh well $6k last nihgt in the million was nice. And my target for september of $40k edges ever nearer. I have invested in some poker books on omaha, omaha split, stud, and stud hilo. So my new challenge is to learn these games and become good at them. I plan to play low stakes ring games to gain some experience then maybe move up limits when i feel confident. Hopefully by next years wsop i can enter a mtt that isnt holdem/

Posted Mon Apr 02, 2007 2:18 pm GMT by Ciso_B
congratulations on the cash bro.... cant say im in the least bit surprised about u quitting this quest - you really never finish these kind of things , but saying that now you can focus on building your roll.

Posted Sun Apr 08, 2007 7:17 pm GMT by Ciso_B
I am gonna do similar to what u tryin to do aelred, instill some discipline, so i am doing the 50 quid thunder sngs on Willhill and see how well i do. its not amazin money , but i need to get some discipline with regard to money and picking games to play.

Posted Sun Apr 08, 2007 7:44 pm GMT by kompis
cool let me know how that goes, man id love to see the results of those things.

In a way this short lived quest did give me a bit of discipline, i been alot more foccused in my mtts recently and when i not feeling like i gonna really do well i just dont play. gl mate

Posted Sun Apr 08, 2007 10:08 pm GMT by Ciso_B
the results will be in my blog entries aelred, gonna update more often while im tryin this "discipline" thing.
