MTT - AI early on?

Posted Mon Mar 26, 2007 2:34 am GMT by MrDarling
Ok, I'll admit, this is more of a bad beat, but I also wanted your opinion about the play of this hand. Maybe I didn't need to risk all my chips with it.

First history, this is a private MTT. I've been moved to a new table where only 4 players are alive. The rest are ghosts.

1 big stack and the rest pretty even. Surprisingly, BS doesn't still all the dead money and we pretty much divide it even (was spoken, simply happen due to our spread position)
One player kept raising and folding to a reraise or to a flop raise and became low.
When ever BS stack was involved in a pot he would put the other player AI on the flop if was checked to.

BS dbld SS by calling AI on a flop with A high (A7o)
She raised pre, he called OOP. He checked, she bet. call. On the turn he put her AI unimproved.

Later SS busted out (was a real fish, she thought her 6 kicker might be good enough)

So BS though not a maniac, would raise every time I limped PF and bet every time it was checked to him.

First hand between us :

The very next hand I get AQ again, in the SB. I plan a trap.

Full Tilt Poker Game #2067582429: RaketheRake Freeroll (15387512), Table 59 - 30/60 - No Limit Hold'em - 15:33:39 ET - 2007/03/25
CatFighter: lucky
Seat 1: Hives_99 (1,045), is sitting out

Hero calls 30
CatFighter raises to 250
Smick_001: Cat gonna bleed chips here
Hero raises to 3,270, and is all in
CatFighter calls 3,020

And it works. Thought about this move? Sure there is a small chance he has a real hand that crushes me. but there are not that many. A's-Q's and AK are the only hands that put me in a real bad position.
If I just call and see a flop, I would have to fold UI, since I know he will bet big and he could have had anything. (As he will raise with Axo or with any 2 face cards - and he could be steaming, I've seen him start raising big after losing a big pot before)

Obviously , it didn't work this time. I had the exact range I was hoping for but he out drew me :
Hero shows Ace of ClubsQueen of Diamonds
CatFighter shows Ten of DiamondsAce of Spades
*** FLOP *** Ten of ClubsEight of ClubsSeven of Hearts
*** TURN *** Ten of ClubsEight of ClubsSeven of Hearts Ten of Hearts
*** RIVER *** Ten of ClubsEight of ClubsSeven of HeartsTen of Hearts Five of Spades

The real question here : should I have allowed the pot to be this big in the first place?
Though I believe had I raised PF, he would have called anyway (knowing his hand) and would have put me AI regardless of the flop. So unless I hit I would have had to fold it.

I feel ok about this hand, but want comments non the less

thanks

danny

Are we talking about the 1st hand or the 2nd one?

I presume hand one is a call, since we are actually only behind a set.

Hand 2 , should I have maybe raised before? Flat call his raise? Raise less?

Problem with flat calling and raising less is that I would have had to hit to continue with the hand. From his play I was pretty sure he will put me AI on the flop regardless of the flop. And since I am not sure of his range, I couldn't call unless I hit TP.

Yeah, maybe I should have raised less though. He might had a small pair and then I was coin flipping to my tournament life. Or maybe I shouldn't have tried to be tricky and raise 1st. I think I was able to fold this post flop.

Thanks for your comment.

Tonight I have a live Freeroll, so I'll keep that in mind.

(I keep worrying about getting A's early on, and going bust against a fish with T7s)

I don't really see your re--raise as the problem here, I don't like AQo as a powerful limp-raise hand. Although I just noticed that this tournament was a freeroll, in which case I like the play... but in any real-money tournament I just would have made a regular PRF of 4xBB and played it pretty normally after that post flop, probably Cbetting then folding when he obviously resists with TPTK
