Thoughts on my heads up hand last night

Hi Guys, new poster, be gentle with me 

Just wanted to explain a hand I lost last night, unfortunately it cost me all my chips in heads up. I analysed my play and I think I know where I went wrong, just wanted to see what you guys think and how you might have played it. Here’s a run through of the play.

I’m in heads up. The blinds are 10BB, 5SB (we play with chips, no values), I’m with roughly 50 chips, my opponent is roughly with 100 chips.

I’m on the BB. I’m dealt a JC 4H (not the best of hands!)

My opponent flat calls me with 5 chips. (this point you think he doesn’t have anything either, put him on a high-ish card at best?)

I check just to see the flop to see if I can flop a great hand.

Flop comes down 10D 7H 7S

I check to see if he’s going to show any action if he’s holding a 10 or a 7.

He checks me and a 4S comes on the turn.

I check again with a pair of 4’s and 7’s on the board.

He checks me back and a Jack comes on the river.

I then bet with 10 chips just to see if I can push him off the hand if he’s got nothing (which I suspect as he’s been bluffing all night and I’ve been pushing him off hands with smallish bets), I don’t have a great hand, 2 pair.

He then comes over the top of me and pushes 30 chips in which would only leave me with 20 if I call. At this point I’m sensing he’s trying to bully me off the hand I tried to steal from him at a cost that isn’t too bad to him if I do actually have him beat.

I then cal an all in on him, thinking I’m calling his bluff. He then call my all in and flips over 4 4 for the full house and I’m left feeling pretty dumb.

When I got home I went over the hand and I think there are two errors I made. What do you guys think, or would you have done things differently, or did I just totally screw up?! 

When he checked after the flop and the 4 came down I should have bet (not huge, but enough so that he would have to call me with his full house). If he had called me I would have folded. However, if I still put him on a bluff and got the jack with the checks on the turn, maybe I should have just flat called his 30 bet on the river, I’d have lost but perhaps the all-in was too much to risk on my cards??

My opponent claimed he was checking me deliberately to see if I put chips in so he could trap me. However, this was only true after the turn and upto that point he only had a pair of 4’s and 7’s. What do you guys reckon? Personally if I was him I would have raised my 4’s and made sure the pot didn’t go any further than the flop…..

cheers

First,
You guys play with a total of 150 chips (starting chips 75 each) and the blinds are 5 and 10?

Meaning you start with 7.5XBB or M of 5. When your M is so low (stack / Blinds) you have two options : fold or push. You can't play much poker. So I suggest starting with a 1000 chip or at least 500.

Now for the hand is question. in HU any pair is pretty strong. As most of the time, none of you will have one. It doesn't mean you have to go broke with 1 pair. but with your stack size, what other option you have?

If stacks were bigger you might be able to get away from this. But this river is a tough card for you.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Sorry, i didnt explain the chip situation very clearly. Basically its a 5 or 6 way game but last night was only a 4 way game, starting with 50 chips each. In the HU game i was rouhgly at about 50 chips and my opponent 150. Its only a friendly game and blinds only start at 1/2 and double when a player is eliminated so the HU blinds are 4/8 (hardly WSOP i know).
