when to add-on and when to not add-on?

Posted Tue Apr 03, 2007 6:08 pm GMT by kingetje
there must be some way this can be calculated?

im in a $5 rebuy on stars. 15K in chips. blinds are 50/100. average stack: 8K.

i have no idea when to or when not to add-on so i just did it anyway, but im curious as to what guidelines some think should be followed or considered when deciding to buy an add-on or not?

chips=power.... why wouldn't you add on?

It's probably best to add on at the end of the rebuy period, any other time is a no-no.

Seriously you should almost always be adding on. Unless the add on is going to add less than 5% to your stack and you want to conserve money.

The first time I played the $11r on Poker Stars, I didn't re-buy or add-on once, I think my stack was around 12K at the break and my roll was too small to invest another $10, I did alright, I think I busted around 150th for about $120.

Now I don't even bother playing the $10r because I know I can't afford to rebuy 4-5 times plus the add-on.

General rule of thumb, always rebuy, always add-on.

Really, the only time you shouldn't add on is when you are extremely low in chips or extremely high in chips, for two different (yet similar) reasons:

1. If you are extremely short, the extra chips will be a big proportional boost to your stack, but if you are still well below the average, those extra chips will not much improve your chances of winning. Your success rate will be low enough (depending on the structure of the tournament) that it's likely you're just taking the worst of your bet and donating to the prize pool (for instance, you may add on for $10 but have only $8 in EV because your stack is so short). Note that this is also never the case in the Stars tournaments so long as you have at least two complete rebuys at the end of the break, because even 5000 chips is a relatively decent stack compared to the 75/150, 100/200, and 100/200 ante blind levels that follow. So long as you amass chips before the 200/400 level, you still have enough of a stack to play some Poker.

2. If you are extremely well-off in chips (say you are fortunate enough to have something like 40k after the break), a few thousand chips may improve your chances of winning, but not enough that it will make a noticible difference. Sklansky has a whole section on this in his tournament Poker book. In a tournament, every chip you earn beyong your initial buy-in is worth less than the chip before it, because in a freeze-out, the top prize is much less than 100% of the prize pool. Hence, if you have a really big stack, adding on is likely to give you very little extra EV, perhaps not enough that the extra buy-in is really worth it to you, because your corresponding share of the prize pool wouldn't be that much proportionally larger.

These are extreme cases, and most of the time, you probably should add on, if you have anywhere between 2500 and 30000 chips in the Stars tournaments.

Timeout...

Can someone explain the whole Rebuy tourney?

From what i know, its like a regular one, expecet there are designated periods when you can add a set amount of chips to your stack if you pay X dollars...

Besides possibly wasting all their money, why wouldnt someone have like 1 million chips (in theory) by the end of each rebuy period. Obviously adding 1k in chips to a 150k stack wont do much but, is it like non stop adding? Eye are confused

this is how stars does it... anytime you're at 1500 chips or lower you can rebuy... you have unlimited rebuys until the first break... during the first break everyone can (if they choose to) add on once to get 2000 extra chips...

so say you're playing the last hand before the break and you go broke... you rebuy twice and then go to break then add on and you're sitting with 5k in chips...

playing a rebuy lets you gamble a lot more but you have to be ready and rolled to buy in at least 4-5 times plus the addon...

In any rebuy tournament, the rule is always you can rebuy x times so long as you have y or fewer chips before z time has passed. Sometimes x = infinity, but y is usually the base amount of chips, so you can never rebuy to more than a double stack. At the end of the rebuy period (time = z), players usually have an option for a single add-on that is a fixed amount of chips.

For example, as Ensano said, in the Stars tournaments:
x = infinite
y = 1500
z = 1 hour
and the add-on amount is 2000.
