Reraising light PF

Posted Sat Apr 07, 2007 4:25 am GMT by MrDarling
Hi all ,

I started to spend some time on that other poker Forum (simply because I read through all the new stuff here pretty quick - I much prefer this site's format and posters) and found few new concepts I want to discus :
Reraising PF. until now I only reraised with my monsters. I actually didn't even reraised with AJ-AK and almost never with any pocket pair lower then Q's (often not even with Q's)

but now I read this concept about reraising light, I think it is better move in 6 max where people raising requirements are lower.

So I sat on few $25NL tables and tried this approach . Basically every hand I wanted to play I would raise or reraise (didn't limp or called a raise once) It worked extremely well, I managed to take most pots with a c-bet or a 2nd barrel and build nice stacks.
Often, when I got resistance I would back off, but usually it will be after 2nd barreling into a big pot which was kind of costly, but didn't bother my stack too much.
However I kept getting stacked when I had giants PF.
Example 1 : I have K's and raised. Flop 546 rainbow. guy leads for the pot ($3) I raise to $9 and he push ($17). I decided that I am probably behind here and folded. Expensive, but not stacked.

Example 2 : AK . I raised, short stack called. Flop K55. I lead the pot, he calls. Turn blank I lead he push and he indeed have A5. Well, he had only half stack, but still.

Example 3 : Again K's on bb. Btn raise I reraise and he calls. Flop comes 7dTs3s . I lead for the pot and he pushes. (we're both big stack) I decided he his on a draw and call. And in fact he did have the monster 7s9s and caught a 2nd 9.

So, even though I quickly build my stack I keep losing it.. I'm actually over 4 buyins down. Am I taking the concept too far or is it just variance .

Do you reraise light? And how do you fight it when someone else does?

Danny

If the other forum is 2+2, then be aware that their lowstakes forums are fairly moronic for the most part.

As for the questions.

Reraising light at low stakes will seldom cause a problem. Players are bad, often weak and they'll often cave in to combined preflop/flop aggression far too much. I can often reraise light and sometimes I can play like a complete rock, and it has little to do with 'mixing it up', I just play the way I feel like and it works nicely for me.

As for playing against a light re-raiser, there is no set solution. 3-betting to bluff him, calling to make him bluff off his money and folding to wait for a more prime opportunity has more todo with the current pot odds, stack-sizes behind and how he plays later than optimized rules.

And yeah, I know the 'it depend' answer sucks monkeyballs but that is how it is.

I have two light raisers in my regular homegame, one I'd mostly fold/call against and the other I'd mostly call/raise against and it has more to do with how they size their bets preflop and on later streets than anything else. I'll leave to you to guess how the two bets respectively. Smile

Re-raising light is something you should learn while at low limits, but it is not a necessity. At low limits you really should be doing it player dependent. If there's a guy who's raising 25 - 35 percent of his hands preflop, try 3 betting them with a mid pocket pair or AJ, etc. If you're playing against a bunch of nits, steal from them preflop a lot.

However, the risk in this is that there is a lot more money in the pot, and if you 3bet preflop and bet, their raise all-in basically has you pot committed if you have any decent holding, TPTK, two pair, etc.

At 6-max you SHOULD be raising any hand you want to play. Open-limping is horrible, limping on the button is horrible. Your preflop aggression should be huge. The only time you should really be calling is when you have a PP/SC on CO or button and you're going for implied odds.

If you really feel you have trouble playing deep stacked, you might want to start leaving tables once you go up 1/2 - 1 full buy-in on top. It's not the most "ethical" thing to do. Once you have a solid BR this way, then work on your deep-stack play.

Oh and in your example hands you didn't re-raise light once or get re-raised light once, so I dunno what those have to do with 3-betting light.

Because I reraised often I had a very LAG image (I would reraise with SC etc..) To I think people never gave me credit when I have hands. So they can not believe I actually have A's or K's in the above.
By so often raising, I fail to represent my hand, and now I can't tell if they have only TP or do they actually have a hand that beat my overs.

btw , example 1 I got it wrong. I actually had K's. flop was 552 and villain had 5T.

I almost never reraise preflop for the simple fact that I just don't have enough information yet (at least not online, because some players' body language in live play may betray certain tendencies). Reraising preflop with speculative hands can be a problem because it is often high risk with little reward (remember, "don't turn AQ into 72"). You are often putting yourself in a situation where getting raised is a disaster that can put a huge dent in your stack, which is why I rarely do it without a very good hand, and even then, I often smooth call).

This is not to say reraising preflop is always bad--it's actually quite good in many cases, but I only do it against certain types of players, calling stations and LAGtards mostly, because those are the people most likely to make big mistakes both before AND after the flop, so it doesn't make a big difference how you get the money in. Against many players in today's world though, you can frequently count on them to play fairly intelligently in big pots before the flop, but make some major errors in big pots after the flop, which is where I prefer to do most of my playing if I can.

There isn't any magic formula, but reraising before the flop is usually best against short stacks, or when you are short stacked yourself and you're trying to force difficult decisions on your opponents.

This is the typical post on AVP forum:

Went to LV last month, my boyfriend celebrated his b-day and not wanting me to come, but I followed him anyway with my Mom.

Not to brag but I'm a good LHE player, lots of player in Hawaiian Gardens Casino knows me and they move table coz they cant figure me out, HGC is the bomb, always have 8/16 and 4/8 avail any time of the week.

So I went to LV, checked in to New Frontier, my Mom is the Buffett queen and she does not care wheher she's alone or not, I was going to check on my boyfriend but chicken out, got bored so decided to cross the street and went to the Wynn.

Played 4/8 and saw lots of grinder salivating when I bought in for $200, they thought I'm a donator, need less to say after 5 hrs my stack is so huge that one player started to complain that I should exchange my chips to $100 chips so my stack will be smaller but I refused.

Memorable hand no.1
Got AQhearts on EP, raised it then got 3 bet, flop is A,2,3 two hearts, we jammed the flop, turn and river, of course river was another heart and I won that big pot, BB flopped straight and the other guy has pocket rockets, oh well.

Memorable hand no.2
I was on a BB and a tight player raised, everybody went out, looked at my cards and saw suited 9 & 2, flopped came A, Q, J rainbow, he bet, I called, brick on the turn and for some weird reason, I dont have anything but I decided to test him, so I raised him, he started shaking and clearly did not expect that a lady will raise him, he was clearly trying to say that "u know who I am", he started saying that "I never saw u bluff all night", so I think u have K,10, folded his hand and showed his pocket ladies. I said to him, "board could have paired on the river and u would've won", and he answered, listen lady, "I've been playing this game for 23 yrs and I know when to lay down a losing hand", did not utter a word after that, but I had to get alot of chip racks

I won $850 on that session, good luck everbody.

Me and my Mom went shopping at the stateline, spent the whole $850 I won, oh well.

THEN LASVEGASDONKEY, I MEAN, LASVEGASMICHAEL POSTS:

Thank you so much for that great report. You are a great writer. Hope to see you at ti (Treasure Island) on your next visit. Ask for AVP Mike. Sally or Ron will point ME out and make sure you can sit at my table. Keep them coming and have a nice day!

ME NAN CALLS HIM tiMICHAEL AND HE ONLY ALLOWS DONKS TO POST. AHOLE RUNS OFF ANYBODY HE CAN'T STEAL FROM AT THE TABLE.
