I have started looking at playing some MTTs between my normal grind, grind, grind sessions of NL cash games.
Having played about ten tournaments and cashed in about half of them, I started to wonder ---
How often should I expect to be able cash in MTTs?
AND
How often should I expect to be able to cash in the top three spots?
---
I have noticed that the play in the early stages of these tournies is so bad that its very easy to get through at least half the field nearly every single tournament. Yet, what I also noticed is that, because I didn't get very far through the fields when I did cash, I barely made anything after playing for hours. I ended up about $50 - clearly not worth the 5 hours it took to play in them...
I know I have to improve my late game strategy - mainly because I know I became too tight/closed up after being one of the chip leaders for most of a few of the tournaments.
Thanks.

"Top 3" is, well, physically impossible to answer, since we don't know the field sizes.
And the other one is very hard to answer too, but a good rule of thumb is to look at what % make the money, and assuming you're better than average in the field, take it up a few notches. It all depends on the structure and styles and whatnot, but as a general rule of thumb it's safe to say that your ITM isn't going to be massively removed from the 'average' share, regardless of how good/bad you may be.
