Small pairs and set

Posted Fri Apr 13, 2007 2:36 am GMT by MrDarling
We all love sets. Sets are the big money makers in poker.
However, how often do you actually stack someone with a set?
Last night session I got the abnormal amount of sets, but I only got paid once.

So, all you PT users, check your stats and tell me how often you get paid for your set.

Is it worth playing small pairs for a raise just for the out side of hitting our set and then the off chance that someone actually have enough of a hand to pay us off.

So , what kind of a raise is it ok to call with a small pair?

Thanks

Danny

How big a raise you can call depends on 3 factors:

1. How much money you have.
2. How much money the raiser has.
3. How likely your opponent is to fall into a post flop trap.

Also, if the pot is multiway, that's better, because it makes it more likely that someone will get a piece of the flop in a bloated pot.

There really is no magic formula, because the exact estimations of implied odds only exist in math land.

AFAIK, the big money makers in hold'em are AA,KK,QQ,JJ,TT and AK.

My $0.02.

Well today someone got stacked when I had a set....

Got loads of hands in the last 2 orbits and raised reraised lots, so its harder to put villain on a hand.
Needless to say, I hated the turn min raise, but figured I got 10 outs.
$10 to anyone who guesses villain hand :

Yeah its frustrating when you hit sets and don't get paid out! It seems like you play all day trying to flop a set and when you finally do it just hurts when everyone folds.

Since you're offering $10 for a correct guess, methinks it probably was not the A Diamond x Diamond or JT.

A naked 6? Don't tell me it was an overpair...

today I got 3 or 4 set. 1 got paid by a short stack that though his pocket 4's were any good (flop was K56 Turn 6 and I had 5's) so I stacked him (only $10 but still cool)
Before I flopped a set of K's but couldn't get a 1/3 of pot out if the guy..
And then the above hand...

My last 5 sessions I have been monitoring closely my PP, all I have been recording is how many time I flop a set, this is not an indication of how many time I win hands but just simply how many time I flop a set with PP. So far I have recorded 38 PP and have flopped a set 3 times.

My win rate is a lot higher than this but I don’t have PT so I can’t give you the statistics.
If its an unraised pot you rarely get paid the amount to justify putting out 9 BB. So you have to be prepared to call a pre-flop raise to justify playing small PP.

I like to call pre-flop raises with no more than 5% of my stack
The Villain and or the pre-flop raiser has got to have an equivalent stack size to pay me off and can’t be a tight passive player.
I find position irrelevant, if I hit I want to bet into the pre-flop raiser.
If I miss I normally fold to any raise.

This is going to turn to hands where my set bust someone.
in this case 2 people. And the fish who called and chased is open ended draw I wanted to bust for the entire session.
I love it when a plan come together.

I've been getting paid off on my sets a lot lately.

I've been practicing table selection religiously now, and it's paying off big time.
